Recent Targeted Phishing Attempt
To the Campus:
I want to update you regarding a recent email phishing attack that targeted members
of our campus community. This past Friday, several students received an email asking
them to provide sensitive information via a Microsoft form, including log-in credentials
for BankMobile. This email was a targeted phishing scheme intended to compromise these
accounts.
The fraudulent email was quickly identified by the FSC IT security team, who immediately
began responding to the incident. On Friday we sent students an email alert advising
that the message in question was not an authentic communication from Farmingdale State
College. Students were instructed to contact the Helpdesk with questions and to not
click any links or input any sensitive information.
Over the last few days, the IT security team, working with Student Accounts and BankMobile,
has taken further steps to protect our students including resetting several student
email accounts. In addition, students will encounter a new one-time notice upon logging-in
that will inform them of the incident and remind them of the ongoing risk of phishing
attacks.
This incident serves as a strong reminder that we must all remain vigilant against
cyber threats. Remember the "Stop, Look, Think" approach before clicking on links
in emails or text messages. Please refer to these tips on how to identify phishing scams.
Always verify the source of a message by calling an official FSC department if you
have doubts. FSC will never ask for log-in credentials via email or text. You, and
only you, should enter your account information, and only through official links accessed
via the myFSC dashboard and the farmingdale.edu website.
My thanks to the dedicated IT staff who have been working to respond to this incident
and for their continued outstanding work keeping our campus computing infrastructure
safe and secure.
If you should have any questions or concerns, please contact the Helpdesk at 934-420-2754
or submit a service desk ticket through the IT Service Desk Portal.
