Building Temperatures and Infrastructure
To Faculty and Staff:
Each year as we transition into the colder months, we experience several challenges
throughout our aging facilities. From steam line breaks, boiler failures, or stuck
valves and blowers, to the occasional unseasonably warm day, working to keep our buildings
comfortable is literally a 24 hour-a-day job. Our dedicated facilities and operations
staff are often on campus through the night, in the depths of the steam tunnels, enduring
incredible discomfort so that we might enjoy a comfortable place to work.
I’m sure you have noticed the great progress we’re making on several large-scale capital
projects. From Roosevelt and Sinclair to Thompson Hall and the new Computer Sciences
Center, we are investing hundreds of millions of dollars to completely revitalize
our campus. As we continue to make progress toward long-term sustainability through
these strategic capital investments, we are also working to update key pieces of infrastructure
that support building climate control. We are continuing a project to overhaul the
campus steam infrastructure as well as components of our central heating plant. In
addition, there are numerous HVAC projects identified as part of our Energy Master
Plan that will be addressed as we work through long-term capital planning priorities.
We are making good progress, and I am confident that we will all be incredibly proud
of the result. In the meantime, I ask for your patience and your cooperation as we
work through these challenges. Our diligent team often works around the clock to address
outstanding issues, including routine maintenance and work order requests, as well
as critical infrastructure emergencies.
We understand that sometimes our classrooms, offices, and labs might be a little uncomfortable.
Please continue to let us know where these issues are occurring, and we will do our
very best to address them. You can submit a work order via the below link:
