Daylight Hour 2024
To the Campus Community:
Farmingdale State College will continue its commitment to sustainability by participating
in Daylight Hour 2024. We are asking all members of the campus community to turn off
their lights, where practical, at 12 noon on June 20 for one hour.
The sun is Earth’s most abundant source of energy. The light from the sun grows plants,
powers solar panels, and provides an abundance of health benefits. Our participation
in Daylight Hour 2024 recognizes the importance of natural light and its impact on
sustainability and well-being.
By turning off our lights for just one hour, Farmingdale can save 1,000 kWh of electricity
and reduce our CO2 emissions by 1,000 lbs. Collectively, the Daylight Hour 2024 campaign will save enough
energy to power 40 Empire State Buildings!
Register here for an easy reminder to make the most of the natural light available to us. Employees
are encouraged to share their experiences during Daylight Hour 2024 via social media
using #DaylightHour.
We are also encouraging the campus community to consider scheduling a daylight hour
each Wednesday between 12 noon and 1:00 p.m. throughout the year. We can all do more
to support and encourage sustainability on campus and this continued effort is a great
step in our approach to long-term sustainability.
Over the past year, FSC has launched various programs and initiatives to create a
more sustainable and energy efficient campus community. These programs will help the
campus reach its energy and sustainability related goals as outlined in our strategic
plan Eight for ’28. Among these initiatives are:
- Creating a Clean Energy Master Plan, which will serve as a guide to reaching the campus'
energy and sustainability goals
- Launching FSC’s bike share program’s second season
- Improving insulation and air sealing at Whitman and Horton Halls to improve occupant
comfort and reduce energy use
- Electrifying Hale Hall’s heating system with an air source heat pump, reducing FSC’s
reliance on fossil fuels
- Reviving FSC’s on-campus community garden
- Adjusting HVAC equipment schedules and set points to match building occupant needs,
improving occupant comfort while reducing energy use
- Installing LED light fixtures and smart sensors across campus to provide higher quality
light where and when it's needed, while improving energy efficiency
- Educating over 100 campus users on pollution prevention methods through a grant received
from the New York State Pollution Prevention Institute
