Shelter in Place Training
March 20, 2023
To the Campus,
On Monday, March 27, our University Police Department will be conducting two shelter-in-place
emergency drills on campus that will be open to all who wish to participate.
- The first drill is scheduled for noon in Greenley Hall. Anyone wanting to participate is asked to be in Greenley room 105 by 11:45 a.m. for a briefing with UPD.
- The second drill is scheduled for 3 p.m. in the Campus Center. Anyone wanting to participate is asked to arrive in the Campus Center Ballroom by 2:45 p.m. for a briefing.
UPD will be posting physical signs in both buildings several days ahead of the training
exercise. Employees working in these buildings who do not wish to be present should
arrange with their supervisors to be out of the building at least 15 minutes before
the drill begins. Both buildings will be closed off during the drills and no one will
be permitted in the building except those involved. However, any employees participating
in either drill may leave at any time if they feel uncomfortable and no longer wish
to participate.
Both drills will simulate a threat somewhere else on campus. Once this simulated threat
is neutralized, UPD will enter the building and clear people to a safe location. After
the buildings are cleared, participants are asked to return to the briefing rooms
for a discussion with UPD. These discussions are very valuable for both UPD and employees,
and are an opportunity for us to share thoughts and/or concerns following the training
exercise.
In both situations UPD will use blue simulated weapons. No actual firearms will be
present during the drills.
My thanks to Chief Daniel Daugherty and the UPD for their continued diligence, and
to the campus community for their support and participation in these important drills.
