Campus Safety: Door Lock Infrastructure
November 10, 2022
To Faculty and Staff:
As recently reported during our second UPD Town-Hall Campus Safety meeting with Chief
Daugherty, the campus has completed a comprehensive review of the locking infrastructure
installed on classroom doors in an effort to improve our response in the event of
a campus emergency. University Police and Physical Plant staff conducted a thorough
review of all classroom doors on campus to determine which may be outfitted with electronic
swipe-card locking systems and which would need to be fitted with specialized red-button
locking mechanisms.
As a result of this effort our campus has dramatically improved its ability to respond
to potential threats and protect the safety and security of our community. We now
have 486 locks on campus that can be locked remotely from UPD headquarters and 50
additional classroom doors that have been outfitted with red-button locks. These locks
enable the classroom to be locked from the inside. In both instances, anyone who is
inside the room while the campus is locked-down will still be able to exit should
the need arise.
We will continue to look for ways in which we can increase our security. To that end,
should there be any classroom door that was missed as part of this effort please don’t
hesitate to contact Chief Daugherty directly so that the issue can be resolved. We
are holding a third UPD Town-Hall on campus safety December 5 at 11 a.m. in the Campus
Center Ballroom. I would encourage you to participate, ask questions, and take part
in any future security trainings we may offer.
My thanks to the UPD and Physical Plant teams who worked to complete this project
and to Chief Daugherty for his work leading these important conversations.
