Daylight Hour 2022
June 21, 2022
To the Campus Community:
Sustainability is an issue gaining traction across the SUNY system. For the past several
years, many SUNY campuses have joined the cause by supporting a Daylight Hour.
Farmingdale State College will once again join in this international initiative on
Wednesday, June 22, 2022. Where practical, all members of the campus community are
asked to turn off their lights for one hour at noon to reflect on sustainability and
well-being in their work environment, and share their experiences via social media
(#DaylightHour).
Daylight is Earth’s most abundant source of energy. It grows plants and powers solar
panels, while providing an abundance of health benefits. Daylight Hour 2022 recognizes
this simple relationship between sustainability and well-being. Utilizing daylight
in our workspaces decreases our carbon emissions while improving our health.
I would encourage all members of the campus community to consider a daylight hour
each Wednesday between noon and 1 p.m., where possible, throughout the year. We can
do more to support and encourage sustainability on campus and this effort would be
a great start to a long-term sustainability plan and overall reduction in emissions
on campus.
