2027 SURI Faculty Mentor Applications Now Open!
Sent on behalf of the Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarship (OURS)
To Faculty and Staff:
Applications to be a faculty mentor for the 2027 Summer Undergraduate Research Institute
(SURI) are now open and will remain open until Monday, November 2, 2026. Any faculty
or staff member who is interested in mentoring students in research this summer is
encouraged to apply. Visit the Becoming a SURI Mentor webpage for more information.
SURI is a summer-long, immersive research experience, typically 10 to 12 weeks, designed
for Farmingdale first- and second-year students, as well as high school juniors and
seniors who are ready to explore hands-on, real-world research.
Faculty mentors receive a stipend of up to $5,000 for leading a SURI research cluster. Clusters of mentees include two Farmingdale
Fellows and up to three high school scholars.
By serving as a SURI mentor, you:
- Enhance research productivity and gain new perspectives on investigation.
- Strengthen integration of teaching and research activities, and build more meaningful
professional relationships with students.
- Support institutional goals such as student retention, especially for historically
underserved students.
- Advance your research agenda via dedicated undergraduate and high school mentees and
strengthen your teaching, advising, and mentorship portfolio.
- Enhance students’ experiences by shaping their investigative growth and professional
identity and building a pipeline of talented long-term research students.
- Receive a competitive stipend and formal recognition for mentorship.
- Increase opportunities to publish and present your work during SURI and beyond.
Each summer, SURI scholars are matched with faculty-mentored projects across nearly
every discipline at Farmingdale. Students may join a lab, design a creative project,
collect and analyze data, build technical prototypes, work with community partners,
or engage in scholarly inquiry, depending on the project.
SURI is a competitive opportunity, and spots are limited. All applications are reviewed
and selected based on student needs, the variety of projects submitted, and the overall
applications submitted for that given cycle. New and former mentors are encouraged
to apply, but previous participation in SURI does not guarantee a spot.
For more information, please visit the SURI webpage or email ours@farmingdale.edu.
