Daylight Hour 2026 and FSC Sustainability Initiatives
To the Campus Community:
Recognizing the importance of natural light as an energy source and its impact on
well-being, FSC will continue its commitment to sustainability by participating in
Daylight Hour 2026. All campus members are encouraged to turn off their lights, where
practical, for one hour at 12:00 noon today, June 24. By participating, the College can save 500 kWh of electricity and reduce our CO2 emissions by 500 lbs. Collectively, the Daylight Hour 2026 campaign will save enough
energy to power forty Empire State Buildings!
Please consider scheduling a daylight hour each Wednesday between 12:00 noon and 1:00
p.m. throughout the year. This continued effort is an important step in our approach
to long-term sustainability.
As we work toward reaching the College's energy- and sustainability-related goals
outlined in our Eight for ’28 strategic plan, FSC has launched various programs and
initiatives over the past year. Among these are:
- Reducing campus waste through the annual Move-Out Donation program.
- Performing critical maintenance on campus electrical systems.
- Streamlining the surplus property program through a grant received from the Center
for Sustainable Materials Management.
- Adjusting HVAC equipment schedules and set points to match building occupant needs,
improving occupant comfort while reducing energy use.
- Growing organic produce at the Giving Garden for the Food Pantry.
- Installing LED light fixtures and smart sensors across campus to provide higher quality
light where and when it's needed, while improving energy efficiency.
- Beautifying campus through tree plantings, the creation of a pollinator garden, and
ongoing improvements to campus grounds.
