Call for Applications: General Education Civic Discourse Course Approval
Sent on behalf of the General Education Committee
To FSC Faculty:
As you know, the SUNY Civic Discourse competency requirement of the general education
standards goes into effect in the fall of 2026.
To meet the new requirement, we need to ensure that we have a sufficient number of
courses in the FSC curriculum that meet the Civic Discourse Learning Objectives:
Students will demonstrate the discourse skills necessary to participate in civic life,
including:
- The deliberation of ideas through reasoned inquiry that seeks new information and
considers multiple viewpoints; and
- The ethical practice of advocacy, dissent, and dialogue that constructively attends
to points of conflict.
This is the last call this academic year for you to submit your course for approval
to fulfill the SUNY Civic Discourse requirement.
To initiate the process of designating a course as a Civic Discourse class, log on
to Axiom Mentor, click on "Applications," scroll down the page, and click on "Civic
Discourse 2025-2026:"
The application is fairly simple and the six questions can be previewed on this document. Before applying, it is most important to secure the endorsement from the department for designating
the course "C," as the designation will hold for ALL sections of the course.
The deadline to submit your application is April 15.
