To the Campus Community:
The Office of Community and Civic Engagement (OCCE), the SUNY Office of the Provost,
and the SUNY Impact Foundation present THE INTELLECTUAL SQUARE: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Civic Discourse and Engagement.
Students, faculty, and staff are invited to this dynamic panel discussion exploring
how civic learning and civic discourse can be embedded across academic disciplines
and integrated into student pathways. This conversation aligns with the SUNY Civic
Discourse General Education requirement and Farmingdale State College’s commitment
to advancing democratic engagement across the curriculum and co-curriculum.

- John Draeger, PhD, professor of philosophy, University at Buffalo – Scholar of moral and political
philosophy and co-founder of the NSF-supported Improve with Metacognition project.
- Chris Keegan, PhD, associate professor of philosophy and director of the Institute for Civil Society
and Democracy, SUNY Oneonta.
Moderator
- Bahar Zoghi PhD, associate dean and professor of civil engineering technology, Farmingdale State
College and Civic Discourse & Intellectual Square Initiative (CDISI) committee member.
This conversation will explore strategies for integrating civic learning into academic
programs, strengthening dialogue across differences, and preparing students for engaged
citizenship. It is part of Farmingdale State College’s CDISI, spearheaded by the Office
of Community and Civic Engagement.
