Notice: Upcoming NYS OFPC Periodic Fire & Life Safety Inspection
Sent on behalf of the Office of the Fire Marshal
To the Campus Community:
The New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control (OFPC) will be conducting
their periodic Fire and Life Safety Inspection of Farmingdale State College in the
coming weeks. These inspections are required by New York State and ensure that campus
buildings remain compliant with the NYS Fire Code, Life Safety Code, and campus fire
safety standards.
What You Should Do to Prepare: To help ensure a smooth inspection process, all campus departments and occupants
should review the following fire safety expectations:
Keep Exit Routes Clear: Hallways, corridors, stairwells, and exit doors must remain completely unobstructed.
Do not store furniture, boxes, equipment, or carts in exit pathways. Doors may not
be “chocked” or held open by any means.
Maintain Access to Fire Protection Equipment: Fire extinguishers, pull stations, alarm panels, and sprinkler control valves must
remain fully accessible at all times. A minimum of 36 inches of clearance should be
maintained around fire protection equipment.
Electrical Safety: Do not daisy-chain power strips or extension cords. Use only UL-listed surge protectors
where permitted. Extension cords should not be used as permanent wiring.
Proper Storage: Do not store materials within 18 inches of sprinkler heads. Keep mechanical rooms,
electrical rooms, fire alarm control panel/suppression rooms, and utility spaces clear
of all storage.
Prohibited Items: Incense, candles, diffusers, space heaters (unless approved by Fire Marshal), e-scooters,
hoverboards, and non-approved appliances are not permitted in most campus spaces.
Laboratories and Specialized Areas: Ensure chemicals and hazardous materials are properly labeled and stored. Maintain
clear access to safety showers, eyewash stations, and emergency equipment.
During the Inspection:
- OFPC inspectors will be accompanied by the FSC Fire Marshal.
- Inspectors may briefly enter offices or work areas to review fire safety conditions.
- If deficiencies are identified, departments may be contacted to assist in correcting
them.
Your cooperation helps ensure Farmingdale State College remains a safe and code-compliant
environment for everyone.
