Call for Applications: General Education Civic Discourse Course Approval
Sent on behalf of the General Education Committee
To FSC Faculty:
As you may have heard, SUNY has added a Civic Discourse competency requirement to
the general education standards. This requirement will be implemented in the fall
of 2026.
To prepare for the new requirement, please identify courses in the FSC curriculum
that meet the Civic Discourse Learning Objectives:
Students will demonstrate the discourse skills necessary to participate in civic life,
including:
- The deliberation of ideas through reasoned inquiry that seeks new information and
considers multiple viewpoints; and
- The ethical practice of advocacy, dissent, and dialogue that constructively attends
to points of conflict.
Visit the SUNY General Education Framework webpage for more information and guidance.
To determine whether a course should carry the "C" designation, we have created an
application process. There is a committee of faculty from each school of the College
that will collaborate on the approval process.
To initiate the process of designating a course as a Civic Discourse class, log on
to Axiom Mentor, click on "Applications," scroll down the page, and click on "Civic
Discourse 2025-2026:"
The application is fairly simple and the six questions can be previewed on this document. Before applying, it is most important to secure the endorsement from the department for designating
the course "C," as the designation will hold for ALL sections of the course.
Once the departmental endorsement is obtained, please submit your application by November 15.
