Fire Safety Alert – “Chromebook Challenge” Social Media Trend
Sent on behalf of the Office of the Fire Marshal
To Faculty and Staff:
My office has become aware of a potentially dangerous social media trend known as
the “Chromebook Challenge.” This trend encourages students to insert metal objects—such
as paper clips, push pins, or aluminum foil—into the USB ports of their Chromebooks
or laptops, causing an electrical short circuit. Such actions can lead to lithium-ion
battery failure, posing a serious risk of fire and the release of toxic and flammable
vapors. Failed attempts may leave devices unstable, presenting a fire risk at a later
time. According to the Office of Fire Prevention and Control, as well as recent media
reports, several schools in New York have experienced incidents related to this trend
in recent weeks.
Faculty and staff are asked to immediately report any observed incidents—successful
or not—to this office at 934-420-2603, and to University Police at 934-420-2111.
