Campus Fire Safety Notice
Sent on behalf of the Office of the Fire Marshal
To the Campus Community:
As we prepare for the upcoming annual inspection by the New York State Office of Fire
Prevention and Control, I want to take a moment to remind you of some important campus
fire safety requirements:
- Doors of any kind are not to be held open with a chock or wedge. However, doors with installed closers may be propped open, as they will automatically
close upon activation of the fire alarm.
- Fire and life safety equipment must remain unobstructed at all times. This includes
fire extinguishers, fire alarm panels, fire doors, manual pull stations, smoke/heat
detectors, horn strobes, sprinkler heads, and access to sprinkler and fire pump control
rooms.
- Appliances such as microwaves, coffee makers, and refrigerators must be plugged directly
into a wall outlet. They may not be connected to surge protectors or multi-plug adapters.
Additionally, surge protectors may not be connected together or “daisy-chained,” and
the use of extension cords is strictly prohibited.
- Mechanical, electrical, generator, elevator machine, data/phone/IT, fire alarm panel,
and fire suppression rooms must remain free of combustible materials (e.g., cardboard
boxes, file storage). Regularly used items such as filters and ladders are also prohibited
from being stored in these rooms.
- Egress pathways, exit corridors, and hallways must remain clear and unobstructed at
all times.
- The use of candles, incense, wax warmers, or any devices with open flames is strictly
prohibited.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss a fire code violation, please contact
my office at 934-420-2603. Thank you for your continued commitment to the safety of
our campus.
