Tutoring Responsibilities & Expectations

Student Tutoring Agreement

Welcome to the Tutoring Center! We are pleased to provide you with tutoring services to assist you in your studies. This service is available to currently registered Farmingdale State College students for courses in which they are currently enrolled.

By using the Tutoring Center’s services, you are agreeing to the terms below. Please carefully read each statement.

  1. I understand that the purpose of tutoring is to receive clarification and supplemental assistance with course material. The role of a tutor is to help me develop more effective learning and study strategies in order to master the course material on my own.

  2. I understand that tutors are not course instructors and therefore not responsible for teaching course material. My tutor may have learned the material differently or completed the course with a different instructor; it is possible that this will affect their ability to assist me. I am responsible for seeking clarification from the course instructor if I am uncertain of course requirements, expectations, or policies.

  3. I understand that the tutor's job is to help me to become a more self-sufficient, independent learner. Furthermore, I acknowledge that I am solely responsible for my own learning and academic performance.

  4. I understand that it is my responsibility to attend tutoring sessions prepared, on time, and while exhibiting appropriate behavior.
    • Being prepared for a tutoring session means having specific questions and/or concepts for which clarification is needed as well bringing with me any supplies needed while working with a tutor. Supplies may include, but are not limited to: notes, books, other study materials I have created, etc.
    • Being on time for a tutoring session means arriving to the Center and checking in by my designated appointment time (or my virtual tutoring room for remote appointments). If I need to cancel or reschedule my appointment I must provide the Center's staff with at least 24 hours’ notice. I will be marked as a "No Show" if I fail to attend my tutoring session without first notifying the tutor or Tutoring Center staff. After two "No Show" incidents I will not be permitted to schedule any future tutoring appointments for the semester.
    • Exhibiting appropriate behavior means actively participating in a session, and conducting myself according to the Student Code of Conduct and the COVID-19 Prohibited Behaviors and Enforcement policy. If I fail to exhibit appropriate behavior my appointment may be ended early and I may be asked to leave the Center.

  5. I understand that it is my responsibility to be academically honest. In accordance with the College's Academic Integrity Policy policy, the Tutoring Center strictly prohibits those who utilize its services from engaging in any forms of academic dishonesty. I understand that tutors are not permitted to complete any type of assignment for me, directly provide me with answers to an assignment, assist me with a graded assignment (such as take-home exams, projects, lab reports, etc.), or evaluate (“grade”) my assignment. If I am not academically honest while using tutoring services it could result in my course instructor/academic department being notified, a loss of tutoring privileges, or a referral to the Office of the Dean of Students for disciplinary action.

  6. [Remote tutoring sessions only] I understand that all online tutoring sessions are recorded and archived and the Center's staff reserves the right to monitor online tutoring sessions for quality control and staff training purposes.

I agree to follow all Farmingdale State College and Tutoring Center policies, including those relating to COVID-19 health and safety protocols. I understand that failure to abide by College or Center policies and procedures could result in a loss of tutoring privileges. If I have any questions on these policies, I understand it is my responsibility to seek clarification from the Tutoring Center staff.

We hope that you benefit as well as enjoy your sessions at the Tutoring Center. Use both your own and your tutor's time wisely. We appreciate your cooperation in carrying out your responsibilities and wish you much success in your academic endeavors here at Farmingdale State College.
