STEM Diversity Summit at Farmingdale State

Fixing the Pipeline: Engaging the Community

January 27, 2012

Farmingdale State College’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Diversity Summit will be held in Roosevelt Hall from 8AM-4:30PM on Thursday, March 31.
One of the goals of the conference is to keep America strong by ensuring that vital diversity is present in all communities of work.

Organized by Dr. Veronica Henry, Executive Assistant to the President, the summit will feature presentations on sustainable energy technologies and biotechnologies by leading national, regional and local businesses. National and local leaders from education, business and non-profits are expected to attend, as well as elected officials.

Farmingdale State College President W. Hubert Keen will address the summit and SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher has been invited to give opening remarks.

A group of educators and parents have been holding monthly meetings since February 2010 to create this Summit to discuss the shortage of minorities in science, technology, engineering and math professions and to set the stage for future developments. At the summit, participants can expect to

  • Identify resources
  • Disseminate information
  • Facilitate collaboration
  • Problem solve
  • Support innovation

Distinguished speakers include Dr. Chad Womack, White House Advisor, Domestic Policy Council and Education Principles, Mr. Leland Melvin, Associate Administrator for Education and NASA Astronaut, as well as educators from Columbia University, Farmingdale State College, Stony Brook University, SUNY Old Westbury, Suffolk Community College and Dowling.
