Constance Philips Joins Farmingdale State

Dental Hygiene Department Welcomes New Assistant Professor

Dr. Constance B. Phillips has received an appointment as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Dental Hygiene at Farmingdale State College. Dr. Phillips' research interests include restorative dentistry and prosthodontics. Her responsibilities in the fall term included Clinical Bay instruction, serving as one of the Supervising Dentists at Farmingdale's Dental Hygiene Care Center, and instruction in the Dental and Oral Anatomy and Pain Management courses.

Phillips esteemed teaching record includes appointments at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (2005-2008), Columbia University's School of Dental and Oral Surgery (1984-2005), Southern Illinois University (1979-1984), and Boston University (1976-1979). Over her career as a dental and dental hygiene educator, Phillips distinguished herself through a strong commitment to academic service and membership in numerous professional organizations and societies. In 1991, she was recognized with the Edward V. Zegarelli Award for Teaching Excellence.

In the field of research, Philips has done work on informatics in the field of dentistry, computerized training of dental hygiene personnel, the esthetics of prosthodontics, and denture construction. Her research has appeared in the Journal of Dental Research, the Journal of Dental Education, and the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry. As a professional practitioner, she has worked in New York, Illinois, and Massachusetts, including serving as the attending dentist at Columbia University's Offsite Treatment Center for HIV/AIDS patients.

Philips received a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Howard University in 1976. More recently, she earned a Master of Arts in Biomedical Informatics from Columbia University. She also holds a Certificate of Advance Graduate Studies in Prosthodontics from Boston University and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Temple University. She is professionally licensed in the states of New York and Massachusetts.
