Gustave Nelson Memorial Scholarship Awarded
Mrs. Anne Nelson Bangs (Professor Nelson's widow),
Glenys Hernandez and Dr. Lloyd Makarowitz,
chair of the Department of Physics The Department of Physics presented the Gustave Nelson Memorial Scholarship to outstanding bioscience student, Ms. Glenys Hernandez. The ceremony was attended by Mrs. Anne Nelson Bangs (Professor Nelson's widow), Dr. Lloyd Makarowitz, chair of the Department of Physics and faculty colleagues of Professor Nelson.
Ms. Hernandez, a resident of Brooklyn, is a member of the Bioscience Club, LASO (Latin American Student Organization) and CSTEP (Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program). When asked what accomplishment she was most proud of, Ms. Hernandez said, "I am most proud of the opportunity to do research with Dr. Francis Santiago-Schwarz, as well as conducting cancer research with OSI Pharmaceutical under the guidance of Dr. Sharon Barr .
The award includes a check for $500 and a certificate from the American Association of Physics Teachers. Long-time Farmingdale resident Professor Nelson was a much-loved physics professor who had taught at Farmingdale State for 31 years when he died in March 1998.
