For the first time since it transitioned to a four-year institution in the early 1990s, Farmingdale State College’s enrollment exceeded 8,000 when classes began on August 27. Farmingdale’s overall enrollment has skyrocketed by over 80 percent since 2000 while full-time enrollment is up over 36 percent in that span—both among the largest increases of any SUNY school.
“The quality of academic programs, the strategic decision to shape these programs in ways that make our students highly employable, and the value we provide at a SUNY tuition cost are key factors in our growth,” said Farmingdale President W. Hubert Keen. “We are attracting a higher quality of student because people are noticing the upward trajectory we are enjoying.”
The College reached nearly 100 percent or more in every enrollment target category, led by the 126 percent it reached in the target of first-time students and 117 percent in transfer students.
The figures coincided with the launch of a new advertising theme, “Reach Higher.”
“We believe the theme reflects the tremendous progress we have made as an institution,” said Dr. Keen. “Our admissions standards are among the best of all the colleges in the region and extremely competitive in specific academic programs.”
As part of its “Farmingdale Forward” strategic vision, the College has a goal of increasing enrollment at the rate of at least 1½ percent a year for a total of about 8,700. It also expects to introduce its first Master’s degree program in 2013.
Farmingdale is scheduled to open a new Campus Center this December or January which will include new dining facilities for commuters and resident students, a new bookstore, and ballroom space for lectures and campus events. In addition, there will be a ground-breaking for a new School of Business Building this fall as well as the completion of a plaza featuring a fountain near Laffin Student Services Center. A parking lot and roadway project was finished in time for the first day of class.
