On October 19, 2012, Farmingdale State College will host Bamboo – Every Plant Has Its Rightful Place, in cooperation with other northeast-based “Green Industry” partners, to be held from 8:00 am to 4 pm in the Little Theater in Roosevelt Hall.

Planting of bamboo, and its use in designed landscapes, is a controversial topic on Long Island and elsewhere in the northeastern U.S.  Many “running” bamboo species spread into unwanted areas, often resulting in disputes between property owners.  At least eight Long Island municipalities have banned the planting of bamboo, and other communities are proposing bans.

The conference brings together academics, horticulturists, growers, designers and practitioners, politicians and dignitaries to discuss this issue. The conclusion will examine legislation that has been enacted and/or proposed within Long Island communities that indiscriminately ban all bamboo from being planted.

Admission to the full-day conference ranges from $25-65 with a discount for students.  Professional CEU credits are offered.

The afternoon panel, which will provide an update on legislation within Long Island communities, is free and open to all beginning at 3:15 pm. See the conference topics at:  http://www.farmingdale.edu/academics/business/ornamental-horticulture/bambooconf.pdf.

Sponsored by Farmingdale’s Department of Ornamental Horticulture, the American Bamboo Society (ABS), LI Nursery and Landscape Association (LINLA) and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Nassau County.
