ProctorU and UCard

There are two types of services provided by ProctorU. Please see below for additional information and requirements for each.

Think about a test you take in a regular classroom on campus.  The test is proctored (supervised by a faculty member) because of three reasons:1) to ensure that only the student shows up to take the test; 2) to ensure that you work alone; and 3) to ensure that you are not using unauthorized resources such as the textbook, the internet, or your cell phone.  With online proctoring, ProctorU will provide a live proctor and use your webcam to meet the same three objectives.  First, they will verify your identity.  Second, they will make sure that you work alone. Third, they will make sure that the test taker is not using any unauthorized resources.  For more on how proctoring works, see the video below.
How ProctorU Works

 Does it cost me anything?

ProctorU does not cost the student anything unless you schedule your test at the last minute.  If you wait to schedule your test within 3 days of the test, then you will have to pay a convenience fee to ProctorU directly using a credit card.  To avoid the fee, be sure to schedule your tests at least 3 days before you want to take the test.

What do I have to do to prepare to take a test with ProctorU?

Follow the steps below before you take a test with ProctorU

    1. Create a ProctorU account
    2. A webcam, microphone, and computer with Internet connection are required.
    3. Test to be sure your equipment meets ProctorU's requirements at www.proctoru.com/testitout/
    4. Schedule your exam at https://go.proctoru.com/session/new at least 72 hours before you want to take your test (or pay the close-in scheduling fee).
    5. Review the rules of the exam (use of notes, websites, etc.) provided by your instructor.  If you don’t know, ASK!  It’s really important that you understand the rules of the test in order to avoid an incident report or honor code violation during the test. Remove all materials, including electronics, unless explicitly permitted by your instructor
    6. Secure a quiet environment in a private space to take the exam that has lighting equal to that of “daylight quality.”
    7. Dress for your exam as if in a public setting.
    8. The proctor will see you and the room you are in the entire time you are taking the test. No one should be in the room with you and no one is allowed to enter the room.  If your computer has a built-in webcam, you will need to have something with a reflective surface, for example a cell phone (put out of reach before testing begins). This will allow the proctor to view the outer frame of the computer to check for sticky notes or similar items.
    9. You will have to provide unexpired government or school issued photo ID at the beginning of the exam and answer questions from a public database to establish your identity.  Some international students do not have sufficient history for the public database authentication, so they might need to provide two forms of unexpired government-issued photo ID.
    10. Students are required to start and complete the examination in the same location and not leave the room except in specifically permitted situations.
    11. If you run into any problems, contact the ProctorU Help Desk (LINK: http://www.proctoru.com/testitout/wgu/)

Using ProctorU on test-taking day

Online Proctoring: How it works from ProctorU on Vimeo.

I scheduled my proctoring session to start at 11:00 a.m.  Does that mean my test will start at 11:00 a.m.?

No it does not.  Before you can start your test the proctor has to 1) authenticate your identity by asking you questions only you would know and 2) secure the testing environment.  This process will take about 10 minutes. Please plan accordingly.

What does ProctorU do with the information it has about me?

ProctorU is FERPA-compliant. It does not store any personal information about you.

UCard

How do I create a UCard with ProctorU?

All students must make an appointment with ProctorU to create a UCard. The process includes:

  • using a web camera to take a photo, and showing your unexpired government-issued ID to a proctor
  • answering 2-4 questions about you that are drawn from publicly available records
  • entering a short text passage that will be used for keystroke comparisons

For specific instructions, click here.  or to see a video click here

What is a UCard challenge?

This process reconfirms your identity based upon the data collected during UCard creation. This is completed by the student via a link in an assignment or quiz.

No proctor is involved. The UCard Challenge compares the following to your initial UCard:

    • a new photo taken with your web camera
    • typing a short text passage

The UCard Challenge has no bearing on whether you can access, pass, or fail your online exam or assignment. However, it is our documented assurance that you are the student submitting the assignment or exam. A challenge can be inserted anywhere in an assignment or non-proctored exam.

What is the fee for the UCard?

The fee for the UCard is $10.00 which is paid by the student when creating the card. This fee can be paid through financial aid accounts or a debit/credit card. The UCard can be used in multiple courses and is good for one year.
