Food Day at Farmingdale State College

Dynamic speakers and demonstrations will delight and educate

Food Day will be celebrated on Thursday, October 24 from 11:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the Campus Center Ballroom at Farmingdale State College. Admission is free and open to the community. View our flyer.

Campus organizers, Dr. Miriam Deitsch, Distinguished Professor of Sociology, and Lisa Eicher, Assistant Professor of Professional Communication, have designed this educational event to be in keeping with the spirit and guidelines of Washington, D.C.'s Center for Science in the Public Interest. Food Day will unite people with a vision of food that is healthy, affordable, and produced with care for the environment, farm animals, and the people who grow, harvest, and serve it. To do this, there will be demonstrations, lectures, and exhibitors including:

  • Michael Veracka  (FSC Department of Ornamental Horticulture) - Sustainable  Gardens
  • August Ruckdeschel (Suffolk County Agriculture and Fisheries)  -  Agriculture and Fisheries
  • Heather Forest and Larry Foglia -(L.I. Community Agricultural Network - LICAN) - Display and Market of Produce
  • Aramark - From Farm to Table food tasting, demonstration, and display
  • Dr. Martin Schreibman (CUNY Graduate Center) - Novel Methods of Food Production: Addressing Global Hunger
  • Bhavani Jaroff (Slow Food Huntington) - Food Demonstration and Discussion of Slow Food Movement
  • Dr. Zahrine Bajwa (Cornell Cooperative Extension) - Food Security
  • Amy Engel (Sustainable Long Island)  -  Food Equity, Access, Food Report Card
  • Mary Kirby-Diaz (FSC Department of Sociology) - Locavores
  • Beth Fiteni (Green Inside and Out Consulting) - Clarification of Food Terms, the Vocabulary of Food

Food Day is sponsored by the Social Science Research Institute (SSRI) of Farmingdale State College and follows on last spring's highly successful Social Justice and Diversity Summit. For information, contact SSRI at 631-420-2751.
