Admission Process Overview

Academic & Artistic Eligibility

Applicants’ academic records are evaluated by the Office of Admission to determine if the student is academically eligible to enroll in the Visual Communications Program. This includes a review of high school transcripts, SAT scores and college transcripts for transfer students and returning professionals. In addition to a successful academic record, all applicants must have successfully completed at least one year of art. Students transferring from another college must have a minimum, of a 2.5 GPA. Official transcripts from high school or college must be forwarded to the Office of Admissions.

The diverse artistic experience of our applicants requires that we evaluate artistic skills in a manner that is both uniform and comprehensive.  Applicants deemed academically eligible to enroll in the Visual Communications Program will receive an invitation attend a one hour Art Test followed by a Portfolio Review. During this time applicants will present their artwork to a committee comprised of faculty from the Visual Communications Department who will evaluate each applicant’s current level of artistic ability and potential for success in the program.

Art Test & Portfolio Review

Each Art Test session consists of a one-hour drawing test, followed by a review of each applicant’s portfolio. Art tests are offered once a month from November to January for spring admission and from February to July for fall admission. Applicants are invited to attend these sessions on a rolling basis as their applications are received. You will receive further instructions for the Art Test in the invitation you receive once you have been deemed academically eligible to enroll in the Visual Communications Program. Failure to attend an Art Test will result in the cancellation of the application.

Following the one hour Art Test the application process will proceed with a Portfolio Review. Of course, each applicant’s work will vary according to his/her educational and artistic experience. Our applicant’s experiences range from a single art class, to a college degree in art from another institution. Each applicant’s artwork is evaluated on its own merit.

Portfolio Requirements

Your art portfolio should contain at least 15 pieces of your best artwork, neatly presented. The samples included should reflect your ability to create and execute artwork in a variety of media. Specifically, your portfolio should reflect your proficiency in drawing, design, color and typography. An ideal portfolio consists of a broad range of work utilizing both traditional and electronic media, in both black & white and color.

Traditional Work:

  • Preference is given to original work (no scans)
  • Collect artwork into separate sections by course or by medium
  • Identify each section of your portfolio with the name of the course/medium
  • Include several pieces from each course, in each medium
  • Large, framed or fragile projects should be represented by large, high quality prints
  • Photographs of large three-dimensional pieces should show at least three sides

Digital Work:

  • Work that is too large to print (motion graphics, web pages, etc.) must be provided on a flash drive in a folder titled “Portfolio Review”
  • Files must be organized into separate sub-folders labeled by course title or medium
  • Native files must include all images and fonts necessary for proper viewing
  • Any PDF files must have fonts embedded

Portfolio Recommendations

Proficiency in drawing, design, color and typography are best demonstrated by…

  • Still-Life Drawing: landscapes, figure drawing, self-portrait, small objects; ideally from direct observation using traditional media (pencil, charcoal, ink, watercolor, acrylics)
  • Graphic Design: brochure, flyer, advertisement, logo design, poster, garment graphics, etc.
  • Typography: hand lettering, monogram logo designs, editorial layouts, menu, calendar, letterhead, business card, etc.
  • Package Design: including graphics, type, 2D production layout, and 3D model

Presentation

Neatness, variety of medium, subject and technique are key elements of a great portfolio. Portfolio books with acetate sleeves are ideal for both organizing and viewing two-dimensional artwork. These books generally contain black sheets in each sleeve, which provide a convenient and uniform “frame” for the art inserted in the sleeve. Each page should be labeled with the course and/or medium of each piece. Your name and contact information should be clearly visible on the inside cover of your portfolio.

Advanced Placement

After students have been accepted into the Visual Communications Program they may attain advanced placement credit by having a minimum grade of 4 in AP Drawing and may earn three (3) credits towards Farmingdale’s General Education Art requirement. Advanced Placement credits in other studio art courses will require an additional portfolio review.

Transfer Credit Evaluation

This is the more common method of gaining advanced placement. All applicants admitted to the college a transfer students must supply official transcripts for each college previously attended before the transfer credit process can begin. Credit can only be granted for coursework completed at an accredited institution with a grade of “C” or better.

Transfer credit for art courses taken at another institution require comparable work experience verified by and additional Portfolio Review as well as a grade of “C+” or better. Only the Visual Communications Department can determine which skills, demonstrated in the portfolio review, are considered equivalent to the skills attained in a particular VIS course.

Transfer credit evaluation requirements include:
- Copy of Official College Transcripts with art courses highlighted
- Copy of official Course Descriptions of highlighted courses
- Your AP Portfolio of work, which should be clearly organized and labeled by course. Please include every assignment from each course.

Credit by Evaluation

Often limited to industry professional returning to college for a degree in Graphic Design, Credit by Evaluation may be granted for knowledge gained through life experience at a high level of proficiency, demonstrated through portfolio review and practical exam.
