History and Political Science

The Department of History and Political Science  offer a wide variety of lower- and upper-level courses in the disciplines of history and politics. Our historians teach courses in American, European, and non-Western history, as well as specialty courses in the history of science and technology, religion, film, and gender. In terms of area studies, the Department is particularly strong in Central and Eastern Europe, Russia and the Former Soviet Union, the Middle East, East Asia, and Latin America. The Department's political science faculty offer courses in public policy, legal studies, political theory, and national, state, and local government, as well as internationally-oriented courses in comparative politics, international relations, and geopolitics. Specialized courses are offered in the fields of mass media, the environment, religion, and popular culture.

The Department's course offerings are designed to complement Farmingdale State College's mission as a college of technology, while simultaneously expanding students' intellectual and cultural horizons through globalized liberal education. Many of the departmental course offerings satisfy the College's General Education requirements, including the areas of American History, Western Civilization, Other World Civilization, and Social and Behavioral Science.

In addition to courses, the Department is also home to three academic minors:

  • History (Advisor: Dr. Stephen Patnode)
  • Politics (Advisor: Dr. Robert A. Saunders)
  • Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies (Advisor: Dr. Robert A. Saunders)

The Department also supports the efforts of the Model UN student club.
