Dr. Smith received her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from New York University.  Her research on the international influence of 19th century French literary Naturalism, championed by Émile Zola, has been published both within the United States and abroad. More recently, her study of the reception of the works of Edgar Allan Poe in Japan and China, produced a forthcoming publication on the impact of Poe’s fiction and literary theory in China, with an emphasis on Chinese author Lu Xun.   Dr. Smith teaches world literature and composition courses in the English Department at Farmingdale. She received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2006.
