AAIC Director

Dr. Alexander Caviedes
AAIC Director

Alexander Caviedes earned his PhD in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also holds two law degrees: a J.D. from the University of Florida and an LL.M. in European Law from the University of the Saarland (Germany), and he previously practiced immigration law in Tampa, Florida.

Dr. Caviedes previously held the position of assistant professor since 2007, and associate professor since 2014, in the Department of Politics and International Affairs at the State University of New York at Fredonia. At Fredonia, he served as pre-law advisor and the faculty advisor for the SUNY Model EU. He was also held positions as Interim Director of the Honors Program and Coordinator of International Studies. In addition to Fredonia, he taught at the University of Wisconsin, Whitman College, and Buffalo State University. He has taught courses in law, public policy, comparative politics (with a focus on Europe) and international relations. In particular, he enjoys collaborating on research with students on his projects dealing with media coverage of immigration.

His further research interests lie in comparative political economy, particularly public policy related to migration and labor migration policy. His work on these topics has appeared in journals such as the Journal of European Public Policy, the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, the Journal of Contemporary European Research, Migration Papers, and the Boston University Journal of International Law. He has also contributed to various edited volumes, most recently the Handbook on European Public Policy (2018), Handbook on Migration and Security (2017), Migrants, Minorities and the Media (2017), Migration in an Era of Restriction (2016), and The New Transatlanticism: Politics and Policy Perspectives (2015). In 2010, he published the monograph, Prying Open Fortress Europe: The Turn to Sectoral Labor Migration, and together with Georg Menz he co-edited Labour Migration in Europe (2010).
