Due to the increased inquiries regarding career information and assistance, we have formed a partnership with the Farmingdale State College Career Development Center to address the needs of our alumni.
In April, 2008, the Alumni Association hosted a Career Networking Forum to assist alumni, students about to graduate, and the general public in navigating the career “maze”. Guest speakers and successful alumni were on the panel that spoke to the changing economic climate and the careers that could thrive in this challenging environment. We were happy to learn that many of our degree programs were producing career ready candidates who were able to easily secure employment. Already, for other grads, it was becoming evident that the market was becoming more competitive and tentative.
Over the last couple of months, we have been faced with an uncertain and turbulent economy, resulting in many job losses and fear surrounding job security. Many of our alumni have contacted us as they have been facing these issues, looking for guidance and reassurance. As these inquiries have become more common, we realized that we could be in a position to offer some assistance to our alumni and others.
To that end, we have formed a partnership with our Career Services Center to offer opportunities to our alumni to assess their resumes, build their confidence and enhance their marketability in this uncertain time.
Career Services has added additional times to their schedule to accommodate the need. For example, from December 10, 2008 through January 28, 2009, Alumni Hours will occur from 5 -7 p.m. on Wednesdays in the Student Success Center in Greenley Library, and from 8 - 9 a.m. on Mondays and Thursdays in Laffin Hall, Room 213. Alumni can peruse job listings, have their resumes critiqued, or learn about interview techniques. Alumni can also have their resumes reviewed via email at careers@farmingdale.edu. Please include the year you graduated as well as your academic program.
We are also planning a Workforce Workshop to be held on Friday, January 16, in Gleason Hall, Room 204, from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., where participants can learn the latest successful tips on resume preparation and interviewing techniques, as well as how to broaden your horizons in utilizing today’s technology to enhance your exposure in this competitive market. Space is very limited, so register today at alumni@farmingdale.edu and specify 1/16/09 Workforce Workshop to reserve your spot.
We will again hold our Alumni Career Panel with a networking component on February 11, 2009. From 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. you are invited to participate in the event, to be held on the Farmingdale State College campus in Roosevelt Hall’s Little Theater. The panel includes Scott Passeser, host of News 12’s JOBLINE career program, and Pearl Kamer, regional economist for Long Island, among others. There will also be companies on hand to communicate what they are looking for in today’s market, and how you as a job candidate can stand out. They will be accepting resumes. Arrive early as Malka Edelman, Career Services Director will hold a Resume Review at 5:30 p.m. in the same location.
To register for the February 11 event, go to alumni@farmingdale.edu and provide your name, email information, phone contact information, and if you are an alum of Farmingdale State College, your date of graduation and degree name.
