Animals on Campus Policy

ANIMALS ON CAMPUS
This policy ensures the health and safety of the Farmingdale State College community;
preserves the integrity of the buildings and grounds;
and supports a healthful educational and work environment that respects the rights of individuals by setting limitations on the presence of
animals on campus. The following restrictions and requirements are established to address the issue of animals on college property, consistent with NYS codes and regulations.
- Animals are prohibited from all college buildings, athletic facilities, and outdoor events, unless otherwise permitted by this or other college policy.
- The following types of animals are permitted on college property, including college
buildings, athletic facilities, and outdoor events, when necessary and appropriate:
- Service Animals as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act;
- Therapy or comfort animals approved by Disability Services
- Assistance animals when determined by Disability Services to constitute a reasonable accommodation for a documented disability; and
- Animals used by law enforcement or emergency personnel in the exercise of their official duties.
- Animals brought to campus as part of a college approved program is allowable as long as the animals have current proof of vaccination.
- The handler of any animal permitted on campus must carry proof of vaccination and license at all times.
- Fish in containers of ten gallons or less are allowed in non-research facilities with the approval of the department head. Larger fish tanks that have a connection to the programmatic mission of a department require approval by the college, pending a review of other relevant policies, codes and
- Animal exhibits (petting zoos, rides, etc.) may require an operating permit from Suffolk County Department of Health and must be pre-approved following procedure #5 listed below
- Domestic animals (any dog, cat, or tamed animal intended to be a pet or companion
for a person) are otherwise permitted on college grounds.
- Individuals who bring animals on college property shall be held responsible for the cleanup of any waste products, including feces, and any damage (personal or property) inflicted by the animal. In addition:
- Animals shall not be left unattended and must be on a leash, rope or lead of not more than six (6) feet in length and held by a responsible person. (Note: service animals under the control of their handler may be off-leash, if the leash interferes with the service animal's work or the individual's disability prevents its use).
- The following activities are prohibited (except as stated above):
- Bringing wild animals or animals that are not domesticated onto college property.
- Feeding wild or stray animals, including feral cats.
- Abandoning domestic animals or relocating wild animals onto college property.
- Removal or tampering with any animal trap or other monitoring device set by an authorized department or agency.
- Fishing, hunting, trapping, collecting or otherwise taking wild animals from college property, except as part of approved activities.
- Removal or dead animals from campus without approval from the Physical Plant and/or University Police (Note: NYS DEC or other permits may be required).
- Individuals bringing an animal on campus for ANY disability related issue must first contact the Disability Services Center at 631-794-6174 prior to bringing the animal on campus. Instructions will be provided.
- All other requests to bring any animals on campus (not related to a disability) must contact University Police at 631-420-2111.
- In case of medical emergency related to an animal on campus, contact University Police at 631-420-2111.
- If you are faculty or staff, report violations of this policy to your department head who should contact Human Resources. University Police should also be notified of violations to assist with compliance.
- Individuals planning an animal exhibit must first contact University Police or Physical Plant prior to exhibiting.

Tobacco Use Policy

Tobacco Use Policy
Farmingdale State College is committed to providing a healthy, comfortable, and safe environment for its students, faculty, staff, and visitors and is implementing a policy of tobacco usage strictly in designated areas.
Farmingdale State College supports an environment where students, employees, and visitors can avoid exposure to second hand smoke and other forms of tobacco usage. Tobacco usage will only be permitted in designated areas that are clearly identified by signage as allowing tobacco usage.
Therefore, tobacco use is prohibited on campus run property including but not limited to:
- All campus owned buildings, classrooms, lecture halls, residence halls, laboratories, offices, work areas, study areas, reception areas, meeting rooms, lobbies, hallways, stairwells, elevators, eating areas, lounges, and restrooms.
- All fields, athletic facilities, outdoor paths, building entrances, walkways, bus stops, and loading docks.
- All vehicles owned and leased by Farmingdale State College.
Designated Areas for Tobacco Use
- Tobacco use is permitted in personal vehicles located in the perimeter parking lots.
- Tobacco use is also permitted at three locations across the campus. These locations are the gazebo adjacent to Orchard Hall, the smoking shelter between the Business School and Knapp Hall, and the smoking shelter between Lupton Hall and Greenley Library. Tobacco use is only permitted in the immediate vicinity of these locations. The locations will have clear signage identifying the area as a designated tobacco usage area.
This policy applies to all members of the Farmingdale State College community including but not limited to students, faculty, staff, volunteers, staff employed through contract agencies, vendors, guests, and other visitors.
Tobacco use is defined as the usage of tobacco in any form including but not limited to:
- Cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, pipes, water pipes, bongs, vaporizers, and hookahs.
Meaningful and effective implementation of this policy requires the cooperation and compliance of all members of the Farmingdale State College community.
Farmingdale State College will begin an advertising campaign to inform the campus community of the new policy leading into, and continuing through the Spring 2018 Semester. The policy will go into effect for the Fall 2018 Semester.
- Ash receptacles will be removed from their current locations and moved to the designated areas.
- New “Tobacco Use Only in Designated Areas” signage will be placed at various locations on campus.
- The campus map will be updated to indicate locations where tobacco use will be permitted.
This policy will be:
- Included during orientation for all enrolled students
- Communicated to all new hires, students, contractors, and vendors
- Announced on various digital forms including the usage of social media and electronic message boards
- Distributed to all supervisors for distribution to employees
Support and Education
Farmingdale State College understands the addictive nature of tobacco usage and wants to be of assistance for any member of the community who wishes to quit tobacco usage. Students should contact the Health and Wellness Center at 631-420-2009 who will provide tobacco cessation treatment options to them. Employees should contact the EAP office at 631-420-2644 for referrals for smoking cessation programs.

Farmingdale State College is committed to ensuring accessibility of its website to people with disabilities. Farmingdale seeks to make sure the website conforms to the Americans with Disabilities Act, Sections 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and New York State Technology Policy 99-3. New and updated web content on http://www.farmingdale.edu/ follows the W3C WAI's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0, Level AA. Any issues should be reported to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Content Management System
Farmingdale State College uses OU Campus as its Content Management System to manage the website. In order to make it easier for Content Contributors to create accessible pages, the college provides web templates through OU Campus that meet many standard accessibility requirements. Content Contributors need to do their part by making sure that the content they add to those templates conforms to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 Conformance Level AA guidelines by checking for “W3C validation” and “Web Accessibility” before publishing content.
Some of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 Conformance Level AA guidelines enforced on our website includes:
Nest headings by their rank (or level). The most important heading has the rank 1 (<h1>), the least important heading rank 6 (<h6>). Headings with an equal or higher rank start a new section, headings with a lower rank start new subsections that are part of the higher ranked section. Top header must be rank 1 (<h1>).

- Provide text links if using graphical elements for navigation.
- Link text should be meaningful enough to make sense when read out of context.
For example, write "Read more information about the department" instead of "Click here."

Windows and Macintosh:
In order to navigate the top menu bar using the arrow keys, the setting "Always use the cursor keys to navigate within pages" must be enabled. To change this setting open the menu, select "Options", navigate to the "Browsing" section at the bottom of the options page, and finally enable the option called "Always use the cursor keys to navigate within pages".
In order to navigate the website using the Tab key, the setting "Full Keyboard Access" must be changed to "All controls" in System Preferences. To change this setting open the Apple menu on the top menu bar, select "System Preferences" from the dropdown menu, select the "Keyboard" section, select the "Shortcut" tab, and finally change the "Full Keyboard Access" option to "All controls".

Pressing the buttons listed together at the same time also changes font sizes. "Cmd" is the Command key on the Macintosh keyboard. "Ctrl" is the Control key. The plus sign (+) means the two keys around it must be pressed at the same time.
