Farmingdale State's Faculty and Staff Members Honored
Farmingdale Foundation Awards given to Ruth Sapir, Howard Gold and Carol McNamara
Professor Ruth Sapir, Professor Howard Gold and Ms. Carol McNamara were honored by the Farmingdale State College Foundation for their commitment to excellence in teaching, professional service and outstanding service to external organizations. These faculty and staff members were selected by the Deans' Council for their accomplishments and service to the campus and the community.Professor Ruth Sapir, this year's recipient of the faculty award, a professor of computer systems also serves as acting chairperson of the department. She joined the FSC community in 1990. In addition to securing an award for a Microsoft Instructional Lab Grant for software licenses valued at over $66,000 for her department, she has also been successful in creating partnerships with local industries which have resulted in internship and employment opportunities for students enrolled in the computer systems programs.
Ms. Carol McNamara, this year's recipient of the professional staff award, has been an instructional support specialist in the Department of Dental Hygiene since 2003, and prior to this, served as a part-time evening clinic manager for ten years. It is through her hard work and dedication that the Dental Hygiene Care Center, equipment, protocols and inventory for OSHA standards are kept at such a high level of operation. Ms. McNamara's rapport with the dental industry has been instrumental in acquiring donations and elevating the image of the college and the department. Her devotion to both the students and the faculty is unsurpassed.
Professor Howard Gold, this year's recipient of the foundation award for part-time/adjunct professors, teaches advanced writing courses in the Department of Professional Communications. Due to his skill and professionalism, Professor Gold's students repeatedly report on the value of his expertise. One graduate who now works as a marketing coordinator for CBS expressed her appreciation for learning so many things that she can use almost on a daily basis. Professor Gold's dedication to his students and his connection to local industries has birthed a rather unique teaching activity - he has submitted several student documents to various newspapers such as Newsday, the Farmingdale Observer, and the New York Times. As a result, several Farmingdale State College students have been published in these papers. As a technical writer for Forest Laboratories as well as a published writer, Professor Gold brings a valuable enhancement to the college's relationship with outstanding businesses on Long Island .
