Highest Achievers in Each Discipline Receive Awards
Students gathered with their families, friends and professors for the Awards for Academic Excellence Ceremony in Farmingdale State College's Little Theater.
"The recipients . have set high goals for themselves. They worked hard, they made sacrifices and they achieved excellence," said Dr. Beverly Kahn , provost and vice president of Academic Affairs.
College President W. Hubert Keen also congratulated the recipients, saying "Your level of performance cannot be achieved without a passion for learning . and I am proud that you are Farmingdale State College students."
School of Arts & Sciences
Joseph A. Herbst - Applied Math (BS) - N. Lindenhurst
Joseph has been an exemplary mathematics student in all his mathematics courses. He stated that "The mathematics program was especially rigorous yet very practical." He is confident that Farmingdale State College has well prepared for him for his future.
Eric C. Molano - Applied Math (BS) - Levittown
Eric has excelled in the mathematical areas of real analysis, complex analysis, financial mathematics, and probability & statistics. He performed exemplary service in the Department of Mathematics as an undergraduate teaching assistant and tutor in the Nancy Thomson Mathematics Center . He plans to work in the field of financial mathematics or actuarial science and will continue his education in graduate school.
April E. Nixon - Bioscience (BS) - Copiague
April graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BS in Bioscience in January 2008. As a bioscience student, April completed her internship at IRx Therapeutics (in the Broad Hollow Bioscience Park ), and subsequently accepted a position as a research assistant at IRx. She transferred into the bioscience curriculum in the fall 2006 and was on the President's List each semester, completing her program with a 3.87 GPA. April previously received her AS in nursing in May 2000. As a nursing student she was on the President's List or Dean's List each semester, was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Society, and was a member of the Nursing Club. After completing her nursing degree she transferred to NYIT, where she earned her BA in communications with high honors.
Ebony R. Nixon - Bioscience (BS) - Copiague
Ebony graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BS in Bioscience in January 2008. As a bioscience student, Ebony completed her internship at OSI Pharmaceuticals (in the Broad Hollow Bioscience Park ). She is currently interviewing for positions in the biopharmaceutical field. She transferred into the bioscience curriculum in the fall 2006 and was on the President's List each semester, completing her program with a 3.72 GPA. Ebony previously received her AS in nutrition in May 2000. As a nutrition student she was on the President's List or Dean's List each semester was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Society, worked as a chemistry tutor, and was a member of the Nutrition Club. After completing her nutrition degree she transferred to NYIT, where she earned her BA in Communications with high honors.
Christine A. Cullen - Criminal Justice - Law Enforcement (AS) - Lindenhurst
Christine has exhibited excellence in criminal law, criminal procedure law, law enforcement administration, and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa. She participates in the annual American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. She plans to pursue a baccalaureate degree in criminal justice after graduation, and then to attend law school.
Kasey J. Homer - Criminal Justice - Law Enforcement (AS) - West Islip
Kasey has excelled in her criminal law and criminology classes and will enter the baccalaureate program in criminal justice at St. Joseph 's College. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and has devoted over 100 hours of volunteer work in community service and with the Young Women's Christian Association. She is currently considering a career with one of two of the finest protective service agencies in the country; 1), the New York City Police Department [she scored a 99 on her exam] or 2), the New York City Fire Department.
Richard Lampeter - Liberal Arts & Sciences (AS) - New Hyde Park
Having put his two sons Richard and Charles through college, Richard returned to college after twenty years to complete his Liberal arts and sciences degree at Farmingdale State with a perfect 4.0 GPA. As he says, "I'm not your typical student in that I'm 55 years old." Currently director of engineering for New York Presbyterian Hospital , he intends to continue his education, seeking a BS in facilities management and later a MS in fire protection.
LisaMarie Viteritti - Liberal Arts & Sciences (AS) - Greenlawn
LisaMarie is an outstanding student who has earned Academic Excellence Awards from the Liberal Arts and Sciences Department every year she has been a student in it. Her professors uniformly say she is "a great student." She plans to become a nurse.
Marie Herley - Professional Communications (BS) - West Babylon
Marie began her studies at Farmingdale State College in 2001. She attended part-time, balancing family, work, and study. She reports that her husband, John Herley, and daughter, Jessica Byers, have been her bi gg est cheerleaders. Marie earned the associate degree in liberal studies in 2005 and now completed the BS degree in professional communications. Marie is interested in elementary education. She is currently employed as a paraprofessional at J.E. Allen Elementary School - and in September, she will enter the master's degree program in special education at Dowling University.
Vincenza Sugamiele - Professional Communications (BS) - Wantagh
Vincenza attended high school in Italy and later earned an associates degree from Nassau Community College . As a professional communications major, she was awarded the department's 2007 Excellence Award, has served as a reporter for the Rambler, and is currently interning in the Human Resources department at Comtech PST in Melville. Vincenza is also president of the Italian Club and volunteers as a tutor in the Modern Languages program. Vincenza was the valedictorian of the class of 2008.
Christine Carol Barrientos - Security Systems (BS) - Baldwin
Christine has excelled in her computer forensics courses. She has achieved a high grade point average while working full time. She is currently pursuing a career in the transportation security field with Global International, which is a U.S. Customs oriented brokers firm. Christine has the demanding task of reviewing the documentation of cargo coming into U.S. ports. She plans to enter graduate school in the near future.
Miles Dutton - Security Systems (BS) - Deer Park
Miles has excelled in the physical security courses and believes that technology offers a distinctive edge to both the direction and cut of the security function across modern organizations. He is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges , the Air Force Association, VFW, Knights of Columbus, and the NRA. He was the president of the Criminal Justice Club and was the Club's treasurer the previous semester. Having retired from a 22 year career with the US Air Force, Miles now plans to pursue a second career with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security after graduation.
Jean M. Acton - Technology Studies (BS) - Lindenhurst
Jean graduated Farmingdale State College with a bachelor of science degree in Technology Studies. Jean has been a member of the Sociology and Anthropology Club and served as a campus liaison to the students from the Dominican Republic . She worked as a tutor in the Office of Dominican Students at Farmingdale State College and found this position very rewarding. Jean is married and has a 12 year old son. She has been active in the Lindenhurst PTA, taught religion for five years, and contributes time to her son's Boy Scout Troop.
Raymond Flatley - Technology Studies (BS) - Plainview
Raymond graduated from Plainview-Old Bethpage High School . He earned an AA in liberal arts from Farmingdale State . He has excelled in economics, business, and aviation courses. His current GPA is 3.7. He currently works part-time at the Plainview-Old Bethpage School District as a clerk. He hopes to one day work for the Long Island Railroad.
