Ahmed Ibrahim Evaluates Research Proposals for the Austrian Nano Initiative

This past summer Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim , Farmingdale State College professor of mechanical engineering technology, was selected to be part of an international panel of researchers evaluating research projects supported by the Austrian Nano-Initiative which is a part of European Nano Initiative.  Like the U.S National Nanotechnology Initiative, the European Nano Initiative aims to advance comprehensive and sustainable development of nanotechnologies in Europe .

In addition to reviewing and evaluating five proposals (worth approximately $20 million), Dr. Ibrahim also participated in the evaluation hearing that took place in Vienna on October 30 and 31, 2006.  The Austrian NANO Initiative is the public funding program for nanoscale sciences and nanotechnology.

Dr. Ibrahim is internationally recognized for his work in the field of fatigue behavior and deformation of thermally sprayed materials. He was recipient of several ASM Certificates of recognition for his contribution to thermal spray technology. He presented his applied research in thermal spray coatings at the past 10 international thermal spray conferences [1996-2005]. Specifically, he has published several publications regarding mechanical properties of nanostructured coatings.

His latest research, which was accepted for publication in the leading journal materials Science "Surface & Coating Technology", revealed new mechanism for the fatigue failure of nanostructured titania coating. These coatings are candidates for human implants such as hip and knee replacements.

Dr. Ibrahim joined the Farmingdale State College community in 1986.  A resident of Huntington Station, he earned a BSME at the University of Helwan , a MSME at the Polytechnic Institute of New York and his doctorate at Stony Brook University . He is a Professional Engineer and, in 2001, received a NASA Fellowship.
