Farmingdale State Student Awarded Goddard Scholarship

Copiague resident Mel Pilar Espaillat is the recipient of the 2006 Dr. Colin Goddard Scholarship. The Goddard Scholarship is presented to a minority student who shows exceptional promise in biology or chemistry.

Ms. Espaillat is a Bioscience major who was selected to participate in the Arthritis Foundation Summer Fellowship with bioscience professor and noted immunologist Dr. Frances Santiago-Schwarz. She was named Outstanding Student in Biology and Undeclared Studies. She also received the Campus Spirit Award, which means that in addition to excelling academically, she was an outstanding contributor to campus life through her membership in the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (C-STEP) and the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP).

Ms. Espaillat expects to graduate in May 2007 and plans to apply to medical school.

When asked what she is proud of Ms. Espaillat responded, "Being the first person in my family to achieve a college education and completing a research project with Dr. Frances Santiago-Schwarz."
