Farmingdale State Student Wins Spirit Award
On March 15, 2006, the Farmingdale Foundation and Alumni Association Student Scholarship Reception was held in Roosevelt Hall's Multipurpose Room at Farmingdale State University of New York. Over $76,000 worth of scholarship money was awarded to 48 students at the reception. Farmingdale State President Dr. Jonathan C. Gibralter was pleased to announce that Brett Southard of West Islip is this year's recipient of the Justin Kramer-Schulz Spirit Award.
Mr. Southard graduated in January 2006 with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Programming and Information Systems. He was the captain of the Farmingdale State soccer team. For three consecutive years, Mr. Southard served as president of the NCAA Division 111 Student Athlete Advisory Committee. In addition, he organized a student athlete team that raised over $3,500 for the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life. His academic excellence earned him inclusion on the Dean's list three times and the President's list in his senior year. He was one of the four outstanding Farmingdale State students to receive a 2006 Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence.
The winner is selected from members of the Farmingdale Student Corps. The Justin Kramer–Schulz Award was created by Judi Cestaro, Associate Director of Community Relations, in 2002 to recognize the outstanding academic achievement, volunteer efforts, and the demonstrated work ethic of the recipient.
