Farmingdale State Horticulture Students Awarded Scholarships

Farmingdale State University of New York's ornamental horticulture students were honored on Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at the Farmingdale Horticulture Committee Annual Scholarship Reception for their hard work and excellence in the field of horticulture. Twenty-two students received over $47,000 worth of scholarship money in the names of influential organizations and leaders in the billion dollar 'green' industry.

Farmingdale State President Dr. Jonathan Gibralter is pleased to announce that Melody Downing is this year's recipient of the Charlotte Schwenk Award. Melody, an Eastport resident, has earned inclusion on the President's List by maintaining a perfect grade point average. She is the president elect of the Farmingdale Horticulture Club.

Erica West is this year's recipient of the Farmingdale Horticulture Committee Scholarship. She earned a B.A. from New York University and will graduate from Farmingdale State with an A.A.S. in ornamental horticulture. Erica West, a Huntington resident, is the secretary-elect of the Farmingdale Horticulture Club.

Darryl Knight, an East Northport resident, is this year's recipient of the John Vaughn Memorial Scholarship and the Long Island Horticulture Society. He is a member of Alpha Omicron Alpha. In addition, Mr. Knight is a member of the aeronautical honor society, the Farmingdale State Horticulture Club and Pi Kappa Alpha. He was the recipient of a citizenship award and an athletic excellence award.

Adriana Jacykewycz is this year's recipient of the Long Island Arboricultural Association, Inc. (LIAA) award. Adriana, a Brooklyn resident, is a member of International Society of Arboriculture, Long Island Arboricultural Association, and New York ReLeaf Region II. She earned a B.A. in Political Science from Wellsley College in 1999.

Shari Romar is this year's recipient of the NSLGA scholarship, and the Home Depot Scholarship. Shari Romar, a Forest Hills resident, is the current president of the Farmingdale State Horticulture Club. By consistently maintaining an outstanding grade point average, Shari has earned inclusion on the President's List since her first semester in Fall 2004. She interned at the Farmingdale State Ornamental Horticulture Teaching Gardens and the Queens Botanical Gardens. In addition, Shari is a board member on both Friends of the Hempstead Plains and Alley Pond Environmental Center (Douglastan). Additionally, Shari is one of four students to be awarded the prestigious Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence for 2006.

Iman Marghoob is this year's recipient of the 2nd District Federated Garden Clubs of New York. Iman, a Mount Sinai resident, is the current secretary of the Farmingdale State Horticulture Club. In addition, Iman earned a B.A in Biology and an M.S. in Nutrition from New York University.

Katherine Bluethgen is this year's recipient of the NYSNLA Award. Katherine, a Fort Salonga resident, returned to Farmingdale State to study ornamental horticulture after deciding to make a career change. She is a member of the Horticulture Club and an associate member of the Smithtown Fire Department.

Dina A. Turner is this year's recipient of the Bartlett Research Foundation Scholarship. Dina, a Massapequa resident, has earned inclusion on the President's List by maintaining a perfect GPA. She is the president elect of the Farmingdale Horticulture Club. Dina is one of this year's recipients of the Award for Academic Excellence from Farmingdale State.

Patricia Garry, a resident of Medford, is this year's recipient of the Frank Cichanowicz Memorial Scholarship.

Robyn Bellis is this year's recipient of both the Long Island Nursery and Landscape Association scholarship and the Long Island Horticulture Society awards. Robyn, a Centerport resident, is a member of the Farmingdale Horticulture Club and the Northport Art Coalition.

Donald Houser, a Massapequa Park resident, is this year's recipient of the Robert "Josh" Gioscia Memorial Scholarship. Donald is a member of the Long Island Horticultural Society and the Farmingdale Horticulture Club. He will graduate with an A.A.S. in Ornamental Horticulture. In addition, Mr. Houser earned a B.S. in Business Management from New York Institute of Technology.
