School of Arts and Sciences Students Receive

On April 28, 2006, students gathered with their families, friends and professors in Farmingdale State University of New York's Little Theater for the Student Awards for Academic Excellence Ceremony.

Dr. Jonathan Gibralter, president of Farmingdale State, and Dr. Hubert Keen, provost and vice president of Academic Affairs, both spoke about how proud they were of the students and their superior academic achievement. "The Awards for Academic Excellence honor the very highest levels of academic excellence in the institution. The Student Award for Academic Excellence is presented annually to two students in each curriculum with the highest grade point average in their entire record at Farmingdale State." said Dr. Hubert Keen.

School of Arts and Sciences – Student Awards for Academic Excellence

Gabriela Santos, a Copiague resident, was the recipient of the Award for Academic Excellence in Computer Science. Gabriela is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE) and Phi Theta Kappa honor society.

Anna Wilkins, a Freeport resident, was the recipient of the Student Award for Academic Excellence in Professional Communications. Anna received her A. A. degree from Nassau Community College.

Michael Weitzman, a West Islip resident, received the Award for Academic Excellence in Criminal Justice. Michael has earned inclusion on the National Dean's list and is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa.

Marc Fiderer, a Melville resident, was the recipient of the Award for Academic Excellence in Security Systems.

Lisa Scherer, a Huntington Station resident, was given the Award for Academic Achievement in Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Shari Salander, a Commack resident, received the Award for Academic Achievement in Technology Studies. Shari is the founder and president of Technology Studies Society. In addition, she is a member of Theta Tau Professional Engineering Society.

Luis Fernando Segura, a North Babylon resident, is the recipient of the Student Award for Academic Excellence in Security Systems. Luis earned an A. A. from Farmingdale State in Criminal Justice. He returned for his Baccalaureate in Security Systems. Luis attended Marine Corp Officer training with the USMC. Luis has been an active member in the college community, participating in Student Government, Criminal Justice Club, SUNY Day Delegation, and Auxiliary Service Corporation board member. Luis will attend Hofstra Law School in the Fall.

Michael Tobin, an Old Bethpage resident, is the recipient of the Student Award for Academic Excellence in Bioscience. Michael is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. He received the Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence this year and Outstanding Organic Chemistry Student in 2004/2005. In addition, Michael in a member of the Sociology Club and participated in the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. He plans to continue his education in medical school.

Mary E. Owens, an Amityville resident, was the recipient of the Award for Academic Excellence in Criminal Justice. Mary's academic achievement earned her inclusion the Dean's list for two consecutive years. She also earned membership in Phi Theta Kappa honor society.
