ACG & SMART Grant Programs

These two programs became effective with the 2006/07 academic school year:

The Academic Competitiveness Grant, or ACG, is for freshman and sophomores and the National SMART Grant is for juniors and seniors.

The following is the criteria for the ACG program:

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen
  • You must be receiving a Pell Grant
  • You must be a full time student in your first or second year of a two or four year program
  • You must have completed a rigorous program of study at your high school (defined as a Regents diploma with Honors or Advanced Designation or having completed two AP courses with a score of three of higher) and have graduated after January 1, 2005
  • If you are a first year student, you may not have been previously enrolled in an undergraduate program and
  • If you are a second year student, you must have a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale

All students applying for the ACG grant will be required to submit a copy of their actual high school diploma.

The following is the criteria for the National SMART Grant program:

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen
  • You must be receiving a Pell Grant
  • You must be a full time student in your third or fourth year of a four year program
  • You must be majoring in physical, life or computer science, engineering, mathematics, technology or a critical foreign language and
  • You must have a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale

The actual grants are as follows:  For ACG a maximum of $750 for freshman and $1300 for sophomores, and for SMART a maximum of $4000 per year for juniors and seniors.
