complete process of professional communication from
clarification of the problem to the presentation to the
final product. The elements of communications theory
are covered, as well as the criteria by which to judge the
adequacies of existing theories and the techniques for
developing new ones. Students will have the opportunity
to work with actual communications issues within industry
and present their findings in a written, oral or visual
format.

The application of theory involving bibliographic research
methods and the effective use of the tools and the
implementation of techniques needed to locate materials
in a major research library environment. The use of
electronic data base searching and the use of the
Internet will be included. Students will be required to
complete several research projects as well as assigned
readings regarding research applications in information

This course is designed to help students develop effective
skills necessary for communications (both oral and written)
in business. It will provide an examination of and
systematic practice in writing strategies and styles most
appropriate in interpersonal and organization contexts.
Emphasis is placed on the preparation of business and
organizational reports, as well as on routine business
correspondence including letters, memos, and directives.
Although there will be a brief review of the fundamental
skills of effective writing, this course is not intended to
instruct students in the basics of grammar, mechanics and
usage.

TCM 324 - Report Writing & Tech Communic

A practicum in which students produce a variety of
business-oriented and technical documents. This
course provides students with a sruvey of current
practices and techniques appropriate to writing for
forums, especially for technical journals, newspapers
and magazines. It is also designed to make students
proficient at writing technical/professional articles and
reports such as new product information sheets,
technical correspondence, periodic reports, summaries,
process and technical descriptions, instructions and
analysis, and to allow students to incorporate graphs,
tables and other illustrative matter with textual content.

TCM 328 - Writing and Editing

In this course, the student will master three skills: the
application of English grammar to writing and editing;
the use of clear, concise, and precise style; and the
employment of professional symbols and technique to
editing. Students will develop these three skills in their
own writing projects, those of fellow students, and those
of other amateur and professional writers of technical
documents. This course will include an examination of
research, citation and bibliographic formats for print and
electronic sources using scientific (APA) style.

A detailed study of advanced techniques as applied to
reports, technical papers, oral presentations, business
communications and press releases. This course is
designed to provide training in experimental research
methods, especially in scientific and technical
communications. Students are encouraged to
judge the adequacies of existing theories and
formulate techniques for developing new ones;
students are expected to become conversant
with writing and graphics in this area, and to
develop some proficiency at constructing
theories themselves.

This course is designed to develop students' ability to
write and edit computer instruction manuals for various
commercial applications. Students in this class will
process software documentation usable by a variety of
audiences including students and staff at SUNY Farmingdale.
Basic guidelines of good writing and editing will be
reviewed, and the principles of desktop publishing will
be emphasized.

senior level seminar course for those students intending to
graduate from the Technical Studies Program. This course is
designed as a "capstone" course where students will explore
the inter-connectedness of their defined fields of study.
Students will participate in the seminar organized around a
common theme in the sciences and technologies. Students in
the seminar will be required to complete a substantial
research project integrating knowledge from their course
of study and their specific area of interest.

students intending to graduate from the Technical Studies

TST 401 - Internship Technologies Studie

This course is designed for Technology Studies majors who
wish to complete a semester length or equivalent
internship as part of their course study. Students may
choose an internship in a business, civic, educational,
governmental, or not-for profit organization, after
consultation with and permission of the Technology
Studies Chair. Enrollment in this course is restricted to
students with senior status in the TST program and only
after internship has been approved by the Technology
Studies Chair. Students enrolled in an internship will
meet weekly with their academic advisor and will be
required to submit a detailed written report of the
internship experience at the end of the semester. Students
shall not be allowed to repeat this course for credit.
