About The Nursing Programs

The Nursing Department offers three programs that prepare students for entry into the profession of Nursing.  Nursing is a multi-level, competency-based profession.  Competencies range from the beginning level, where essential knowledge is addressed, to an advanced level where knowledge is greater in depth and a wider range of nursing actions are performed.

Each nursing curriculum offers a balance of courses in liberal arts and nursing. Learning experiences take place in the classroom, in the College Nursing Laboratory, and in a variety of clinical settings. All students are assisted in the development of their potential with guidance offered by faculty who possess broad nursing experience and academic preparation in the field.

Bachelor of Science Program

The Bachelor of Science Nursing program prepares graduates to provide and direct professional nursing care to individuals, families and communities with complex and unpredictable health care challenges.  Upon completion of the program graduates will be eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).

RNs who are educated at the bachelor’s level have the knowledge and skill necessary to provide health promotion and illness prevention services in structured and unstructured environments.  They also act as leaders to improve health care delivery and to advance the nursing profession, serve as health care advocates and change agents to influence health care policy reform, and evaluate research for its applicability to nursing practice.

Associate of Science Program

The Associate of Science Nursing program prepares graduates to provide care in a variety of settings to both stable and unstable individuals who have acute and chronic health problems.   Upon completion of the program graduates will be eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).

RNs who are educated at the associate degree level have the knowledge and skill necessary to provide direct client care across the life span. The practice of the associate degree nurse is primarily directed toward clients who have health needs and require assistance to maintain or restore their optimum state of health or support to die with dignity. The associate degree nurse is prepared to address acute and chronic health care needs and common well-defined health care problems in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and certain community health agencies.
