Specialized Internships

Specialized elective internships are available to MLT students
who have successfully completed at least two 200-level MLT courses
with grades of “C” or better in each. They are available
as either 2 or 3 credit options, each requiring a specific amount
of time spent at the affiliated site and a number of written reports.
Enrollment each semester is limited to the availability of an affiliated
site. Topics offered during each semester (fall, spring, summer)
will be posted during registration periods.
The following are topic areas
in which internships have been previously completed:
Histology/Cytology
Students will be assigned to an affiliated hospital or clinical
laboratory for an internship that will be approximately ¾
Histology and ¼ Cytology, depending upon the site assigned
and the workflow at the site during the internship. The goals of
this internship are as follows:
- To provide the student with some practical and on-the-job experiences
in histology and cytology clinical laboratories under the guidance
of professionals in the various laboratory areas.
- To gain an understanding of the professional responsibilities
of histotechnicians and cytotechnicians.
- To achieve a familiarity with the techniques and procedures
utilized in the histology and cytology laboratories for testing
of clinical specimens.
The Histology/Cytology elective is available at Long Beach Hospital,
Sunrise Medical Laboratories, and Winthrop University Hospital.

Research & Development
Students will be assigned to an affiliated research and development
laboratory for an
internship designed to meet the following goals:
- To provide the student with some practical and on-the-job experiences
in biotechnical research and development under the guidance of
professionals in the biotechnology industry.
- To gain an understanding of the professional responsibilities
and technical work involved in biotechnical research.
- To achieve a familiarity with the regulatory issues and developmental
processes utilized in performing biotechnical research.
The type of research involved will vary with each affiliated laboratory
and will include involvement in current research as it is being
conducted at the laboratory. This elective is available at Westbury
Diagnostics, Inc., and Industrial Polymer Research and Engineering
Corp, both located in Conklin Hall on the Farmingdale State campus.

Molecular Pathology
Students will be assigned to an affiliated hospital or clinical
laboratory for an internship designed to meet the following goals:
- To provide the student with some practical and on-the-job experiences
in
molecular pathology laboratories under the guidance of professionals
in the laboratory specialty.
- To gain an understanding of the professional responsibilities
of technicians who
perform molecular testing.
- To achieve a familiarity with the techniques and procedures
utilized in the
molecular testing laboratories for testing of clinical specimens.
The molecular pathology elective is available at ICON Laboratories
located in Farmingdale.
