General Education Program
Effective in the Fall of 2000, freshmen enrolled at all State University
of New York state operated campuses must fulfill state mandated
general education requirements.
All students enrolled in Associate Degree programs are required
to successfully complete 21 credits of general education courses
distributed among seven of the ten delineated competency areas.
Students enrolled in the Medical Laboratory Technology Program
will fulfill the General Education requirements as outlined below.
Five competency areas are fulfilled through courses that are required
in the MLT curriculum:
| Competency Area
| Required Course
|
| Communications |
EGL 101: Composition: Rhetoric |
| Humanities |
EGL 102: Composition: Literature |
| Mathematics |
MTH 110: Statistics |
| Social & Behavioral Sciences |
PSY 101: Introduction to Psychology |
| Natural Sciences |
BIO 130: Principles of Biology |
Each student will then have to choose courses to fulfill two of
the remaining five competency areas using the electives in the MLT
curriculum:
Arts
American History
Western Civilization
World Civilization
Modern Languages
These electives are to be chosen from among the courses that have
been approved in each of these competency areas. Your academic advisor
will assist you with the selection of appropriate courses.
A complete explanation of the General Education Program at Farmingdale
State as well as a listing of all approved courses in each of the
ten competency areas may be accessed on the Farmingdale State website
at www.Farmingdale.edu,
by selecting ACADEMICS, then GENERAL EDUCATION, then “Guidelines
for General Education” in either Word or PDF format.

Lambda Tau National Medical Technology
Honor Society
The Farmingdale State MLT program has established a chapter of
this Society at Farmingdale State for those students achieving exceptional
academic standing while enrolled in the MLT curriculum. The purposes
of this Society are to develop a spirit of cooperation and unity
among the students entering any of the fields encompassed by medical
laboratory technology; to stimulate a higher ideal for scholastic
effort, to encourage research, and to help develop the professional
character of the work itself; and to interest other students in
these fields. Those MLT students achieving a cumulative GPA of 3.25
or better in their MLT courses at the completion of the third semester
will be invited into the Society membership by the Faculty Advisor
of the College chapter.

are advised to take the examinations soon after graduation. Both
exams are computerized and offered in three month cycles (Jan-Mar,
Apr-June, July-Sept, Oct-Dec.) with applications due at least three
months prior to the start of the chosen testing cycle. Students
should obtain applications at least 6 months before the anticipated
date of graduation. The ASCP application is also available on line.

Transfer to Upper Division
A large percentage of Farmingdale students successfully transfer
to upper division programs of study upon graduation. Of those choosing
to continue their education at the baccalaureate level, many opt
to remain within the State University of New York system while others
seek entry at one of the many public and private colleges or universities
on or off Long Island. The College offers Transfer Days at which
delegates from many universities are present to provide information
and answer student questions.
