The program in General
Horticulture provides a generalized study of horticulture. In addition
to the required basic, introductory courses, a wide range of electives
are offered thereby allowing students to develop their desired areas of
expertise.
Students learn hot
to identify plants, run computer business applications and take courses
in botany, entomology, soil science, and business. Students may elect
additional courses in plant propagation, landscape construction, commercial
floral design, arboriculture, ecology, and turf grass management. Laboratory
hours provide students with valuable 'hands-on' experience in the College's
extensive greenhouses and ornamental gardens.
The broad scope of
course offerings within this option allows students to experience all
phases of horticultural operations and to maximize their employment opportunities
and career choices. Professional development opportunities are varied
as a result of the program's many elective choices.
This specialization
prepares men and women for the professional world of landscape contracting
and landscape design. Students are educated in landscape drafting, graphics,
plans, construction, surveying, computer-aided design, plant materials,
and professional practices.
Graduates are highly
skilled and well rounded landscape horticulturists prepared to begin their
career in the landscape contracting profession. A significant number,
however, elect to continue their studies in a four-year progam in landscape
architecture.
