History, Politics and Geography
The Department of History, Politics and Geography offer a wide variety of lower- and upper-level courses in the disciplines of history, politics and geography. Our historians teach courses in American, European, and non-Western history, as well as specialty courses in the history of science and technology, religion, film, and gender. In terms of area studies, the Department is particularly strong in Central and Eastern Europe, Russia and the Former Soviet Union, the Middle East, East Asia, and Latin America. The Department's political science faculty offer courses in public policy, legal studies, political theory, and national, state, and local government, as well as internationally-oriented courses in comparative politics, international relations, and geopolitics. Specialized courses are offered in the fields of mass media, the environment, religion, and popular culture. Faculty specializing in geography offer courses on Geographical Information Systems (GIS), introductory courses on human and physical geography, and specialized courses in environmental interactions, statistics, and a variety of other areas.
The Department's course offerings are designed to complement Farmingdale State College's mission as a college of technology, while simultaneously expanding students' intellectual and cultural horizons through globalized liberal education. Many of the departmental course offerings satisfy the College's General Education requirements, including the areas of American History, Western Civilization, Other World Civilizations, and the Social and Behavioral Sciences.
In addition to courses, the Department also offers five (5) academic minors:
- Asian Studies (Advisor: Dr. Dandan Chen)
- Geography (Advisor: Dr. Emily A. Fogarty)
- History (Advisor: Dr. Stephen Patnode)
- Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies (Advisor: Dr. Robert A. Saunders)
- Politics (Advisor: Dr. Michael Motta)
The Department also supports the efforts of the Model UN student club, Phi Alpha Theta, and the History Club.
