How do I apply?

You can fill out an application online or mail your application to the Application Processing Center in Albany.

How are Admissions decisions made?

Farmingdale State College is a selective school, and we are looking for students who are academically motivated, and have succeeded in high school. Decisions are made based upon the quality of your academic program, your grade point average, rank in class and SAT or ACT scores. The minimum high school grade point average for incoming freshman is 80%. Your previous academic record must include the prerequisites necessary for your program of study at Farmingdale.

Are SAT or ACT scores required?

SAT or ACT scores are required for all applicants who graduated from high school after 1998. This requirement is waived for transfer students who have completed a minimum of 24 credits with a GPA of at least 2.0.

What kind of SAT scores do I need to be accepted?

We expect a combined Math/English SAT score of at least 1000 and/or a minimum ACT score is 21 for admission. The Admissions Counselors at Farmingdale also take into consideration extracurricular activities, awards, community service and recommendations. The more we know about you the better decision we can make.

Is it harder for out-of-state students to gain admission?

The admission criteria are the same for students whether they live in New York or elsewhere. It is natural for a state university to attract many students from within its borders, but we welcome and encourage out-of-state and international students to apply.

Do you accept AP or other college level courses for college credit?

If you have completed Advanced Placement courses and examinations or other college level courses, you may be able to receive college credit for them. Credit is usually given for an AP score of 3 or better, or a college grade of C or better. For you to receive credit, Farmingdale must receive the official AP score report or an official transcript from the other college.

Is there a deadline for applications?

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis up to the beginning of the semester and are reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis.

For the Nursing and Dental Hygiene programs, applications that only admit in the fall semester, there is a first priority filing date of January 15.

Is a personal essay required?

Who do I contact to have my transcript sent?

Contact the guidance office of your high school and the registrar of any college you attend. A school guidance counselor will complete the high school portion of the application and attach an official high school transcript before forwarding it to Albany.

What if I don't meet the entrance requirements?

Students who are denied admission can enter the college as non-matriculated students.

What is the difference between matriculated and
non-matriculated students?

Matriculated students have been formally accepted into a degree or certificate program. They are eligible to apply for financial aid and campus housing. A non-matriculated student can change his or her status to matriculated upon satisfactory completion of specific college courses. You must be a matriculated student to apply for graduation.

What is the EOP program?

The Educational Opportunity Program is intended for students facing financial and educational barriers to college success. By providing financial and educational support, the program helps students to realize their academic potential. EOP candidates must submit financial eligibility information as well as academic information to apply to the program.

What must I do to be readmitted if I have been a matriculated student in the past?

Students who withdrew from the college in good standing and wish to return to the same curriculum, should consult the Department Chairperson directly. All other students should contact Admissions.

Why do I need transcripts to see a counselor? Can't I just bring my diploma?

You cannot be properly advised without a counselor reviewing your academic history.

How big is Farmingdale?

Farmingdale is a small College of Technology offering many opportunities in Bachelor and Associate degree programs. We take pride in providing personalized attention to our students through frequent contact with staff and faculty. Currently we have 6200 students. Approximately 525 students live on our 380-acre campus. The College has four distinct schools: Arts and Sciences, Business, Engineering Technology and Health Sciences.

What is the student/faculty ratio?

The student/faculty ratio depends on your major and level of study. Across campus it's 20:1. The average class size is 26 students. Most of Farmingdale's classes have fewer than 30 students.

Where do most of your students come from?

Most of our students, 90%, are from Long Island and commute to Farmingdale. The majority of our students come from Nassau, Suffolk, Queens and New York Counties. We are located in the heart of Long Island within easy commuting distance from anywhere in the metropolitan New York area.

About 62% of the student population is Caucasian, 13.5% African-American, 9.6% Hispanic, 4.4% Asian and 0.2% Native American. Religious, cultural and economic diversity create a rewarding American experience at Farmingdale.

How many different academic programs are there?

Farmingdale currently offers both Bachelor and Associate degrees. There are 24 majors available in the Bachelor degree programs and 10 different majors in the Associate degree programs.

What kind of athletic program does Farmingdale offer?

Farmingdale State's Athletic Program offers student athletes a wide variety of opportunities for participation. The College is a Division III provisional member of the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association). The Farmingdale Intercollegiate Program is one of the finest in the country.
