Presidential Search

Message from the Search Committee Chair

The College Council is charged by state statute and SUNY policy with the very important role of conducting the search for the next President of Farmingdale State College. The search will follow the SUNY “Guide to Presidential Searches at State-Operated Campuses.” All public aspects of the search will be relayed to the campus through postings on this web page. Search Committee members are however bound by confidentiality to keep deliberations private, and I ask members of the campus community and public to honor their roles. This is essential in order to assure the integrity of the search and protect candidates’ privacy. In the latter stages of the search finalists will be publicly announced and on-campus open interviews will take place.

A search firm, Academic Search, Inc., has been retained to assist the committee and College Council. The firm’s expertise will help to assure that the process unfolds with integrity and concludes with the appointment of the college’s next President.

The Search Committee has been formed, according to specifications of the “Guide,” and its membership is posted on this search web page.

The search firm staff will conduct interviews with stakeholders during the early phases of the process, culminating in an Institutional Profile for the college. This profile, which will be posted on the search web page, will be used to announce and promote the position to prospective candidates.

I want to thank the members of the campus community staff for their input and cooperation, and I thank the Chancellor’s staff who will be involved in every phase of the search. I aim to assure that the process unfolds in a proper manner that identifies our next President for an exciting new phase of development at Farmingdale.

Dr. Patricia Hill Williams
College Council Chair and Search Committee Chair

Search Updates

March 24, 2016

From Dr. Patricia Hill Williams, College Council Chair and Search Committee Chair

It is my pleasure to announce to you that Dr. John Nader today was appointed the next President of Farmingdale State College by the SUNY Board of Trustees and is expected to start his new responsibilities on July 15. Dr. Nader has been Provost of SUNY Delhi since 2009 where he was instrumental in developing Delhi’s strategic plan, including the expansion of academic majors, increasing online capacity and developing partnerships with community colleges. Prior to that, he was the college’s Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences and oversaw the  introduction of new degrees programs in Environmental Science and Criminal Justice. Among his many achievements at Delhi were leading the creation of its SUNY Performance Improvement Plan, initiating a data-driven review to identify new academic program opportunities, forming the college’s first campus-wide assessment committee, implementing assessment of student learning outcomes, and leading the effort to develop a nationally-recognized fully online RN to BSN degree. He received his BA in Politics from Ithaca College and an MA and PHD in Economics from the New School for Social Research.

During his visit to Farmingdale last month, Dr. Nader proved to be an engaging and visionary leader, characteristics which I know will serve him well as he assumes leadership of our campus. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Nader on his appointment and in thanking the Presidential Search Committee for its diligence over the past several months. Finally, I would like to thank President Keen for his extraordinary work over the last nine years.

From Dr. Patricia Hill Williams, College Council Chair and Search Committee Chair

On behalf of the College Council and the Presidential Search Committee, I wish to express our appreciation for your support and engagement in the Presidential Search process.

As required by the State University Presidential Search Guidelines, the Search Committee submitted the recommendation of three candidates to the College Council for review and approval. The Council deliberated, approved and submitted the three finalists to the Chancellor on February 25.

According to the guidelines, the Chancellor will interview the three finalists and submit her recommendation to the SUNY Trustees. We have been informed that a decision will be announced at the meeting of the Board of Trustees during the first week of May.

In the meantime, as instructed by the Chancellor and prescribed by the search guidelines, we trust your continued respect of the confidentiality of the Search Committee Members, the College Council and the candidates until this process is completed.

January 25, 2016

From Dr. Patricia Hill Williams, College Council Chair and Search Committee Chair

I am pleased to share with the campus community a brief update of the Presidential Search process. The Search Committee has been diligently adhering to the timetable set forth by Chancellor Zimpher. With the assistance of our search consultants, Academic Search, we are on track.

During the month of October, the committee finalized the college profile. We placed the recruitment ad in approved print and online media, set up a website and posted the profile and ad. An application target date of December 29, 2015 was announced.

On January 1, the Search Committee began the task of reviewing applications. Each Search Committee member submitted by January 8 his/her top 10 candidate choices from the pool of applicants. The Search Committee met on January 14th, along with our consultants, to deliberate and agree upon a collective top 10 finalists list. Arrangements are now being made to begin the interviewing process to determine by the end of January a smaller pool of candidates. We anticipate on-campus visits by the finalists will begin during February, at which time town hall meetings with the campus community will be a part of the process.

The Search Committee’s selected finalists will be presented to the College Council by the end of February, followed by the Council’s interviews and approval of three or four candidates to be forwarded to the Chancellor.

The Chancellor will then interview the finalists and submit her choice to the SUNY Trustees for approval. The announcement of the next Farmingdale President is projected to be made by Chancellor Zimpher in March. As previously mentioned, the process is moving along according to the Chancellor’s timeline which would lead to presenting a candidate for appointment at the SUNY Trustees’ scheduled March meeting. There is however no regular Trustee meeting in April. Therefore, if the March schedule is not met then the appointment could be delayed until May.
