Overview of the NLN Pre-Admission Exam (NLN PAX)

The National League for Nursing Pre-Admission Examination (NLN PAX) for Practical/Vocational Nursing (PN) and Registered Nurse (RN) Programs. The PAX-PN (Practical Nurse) and PAX-RN (Registered Nurse) are standardized entrance exams for potential nursing students who seek admittance into nursing schools nationwide.

The NLN PAX comprises of three main areas: Verbal skills, which consists of both word knowledge and reading comprehension; Mathematics, which includes basic calculations, word problems, and incorporates algebra, geometry, conversions, graphs, and applied mathematics; and Science, which examines general biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science. The NLN PAX includes the above content as well as a section on health and first aid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can take the NLN PAX?

PN Program: Students applying to Farmingdale State College must sit for the exam in order to be admitted to the PN-Certificate program. Only those applicants who have completed the pre-requisite courses with academic success are encouraged to sit for the exam.

RN Program: Students that are put on the nursing waitlist for the RN Program must sit for the NLN PAX-RN. Please do not sign up for the test until you are notified my the admissions office that you have been placed on the waitlist.

How can I study for the PAX?

To help you study for the PAX-PN or PAX-RN, the NLN offers the following book, NLN Review Guide for LPN/RN Pre-Entrance Exam, which provides an overview of the verbal, math, and science content necessary for admission to LPN/RN programs. The book contains approximately 1,000 practice questions and features three practice exams in each of the three content areas: verbal ability, math, and science. The book also includes helpful tips for test preparation and for becoming a more effective learner and test taker. The NLN Review Guide for LPN Pre-Entrance Exam and the NLN Review Guide for RN Pre-Entrance Exam is available in bookstores or directly through Jones & Bartlett Publishers. How much does the exam cost and are refunds given?

The cost of the exam is $100 and the NLN does not issue refunds for this exam. Review the NLN policy prior to registering for this exam.

Can I repeat the NLN PAX?

Any individual wishing to retake the NLN PAX is required to wait a minimum of six months before being eligible to repeat the exam. If you wish to repeat the exam within one year from your last test date written authorization is required from the director of the school of nursing to whom the report will be sent. Each test is valid for one year.

When are the tests given at the college?

The PAX-PN test is given every Fall and the PAX-RN is given every Spring.
