Engineers Joint Committee of Long Island
The Engineers Joint Committee of Long Island (EJCLI) is a non-profit organization
comprised of representatives from technical and professional engineering societies
and universities on Long Island. EJCLI member organizations, representing thousands
of engineers on Long Island, include a diverse array of engineers covering the full
spectrum of engineering disciplines.
EJCLI was founded in 1984 when representatives of the New York State Society of Professional
Engineers brought together many of the engineering societies on Long Island to form
a joint committee whose function was to raise the public awareness of the engineering
profession's many valuable contributions of the quality of life in society and to
celebrate National Engineers Week in February.
EJCLI's primary function over the years has been to educate the public about engineering
through Engineer's Week activities, such as a Rube Goldberg contest for high school
students, sponsoring exhibits in public gathering places, a solar sprint for high
school students, and holding an engineering awards dinner. In more recent years, while
still providing student outreach activities, EJCLI's focus has been to provide continuing
education and networking opportunities for engineers. EJCLI also serves as a central
communications network between all of Long Island's engineering organizations.
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers
ASME is a not-for-profit membership organization that enables collaboration, knowledge
sharing, career enrichment, and skills development across all engineering disciplines,
toward a goal of helping the global engineering community develop solutions to benefit
lives and livelihoods. Founded in 1880 by a small group of leading industrialists,
ASME has grown through the decades to include more than 130,000 members in 158 countries.
Thirty-thousand of these members are students.
From college students and early-career engineers to project managers, corporate executives,
researchers and academic leaders, ASME's members are as diverse as the engineering
community itself. ASME serves this wide-ranging technical community through quality
programs in continuing education, training and professional development, codes and
standards, research, conferences and publications, government relations and other
forms of outreach.
Long Island Sierra Club
Founded by legendary conservationist John Muir in 1892, the Sierra Club is now the
nation's largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization -- with
more than two million members and supporters. Our successes range from protecting
millions of acres of wilderness to helping pass the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act,
and Endangered Species Act. More recently, we've made history by leading the charge
to move away from the dirty fossil fuels that cause climate disruption and toward
a clean energy economy.
The Long Island Group, with over 7000 members, sponsors outdoor trips, environmental
education, and works to protect the underground aquifer that supplies our drinking
water, our coastal waterways, the purity of the air we breathe, and promotes Long
Island's rapid transition to renewably produced energy from the sun and wind in order
to eliminate the carbon dioxide emissions that cause the climate change that we now
see around us.
