Welcome to the Department of Ornamental Horticulture!

The Horticulture Technology Management program leading to the Bachelor of Technology degree prepares well-trained graduates qualified for a wide range of managerial positions in the extensive green industry on Long Island and beyond. Laboratory sessions offer hands-on opportunities in our greenhouses and our beautiful and extensive teaching gardens.

The Associate in Applied Science degrees in Ornamental Horticulture offered at Farmingdale State prepare men and women to enter the lucrative, exciting, and rewarding field of horticulture.

Courses are available for those who may already be engaged in or those who are seeking to obtain employment in the field of horticulture. Opportunities for a successful career in the various aspects of horticulture are numerous. Each year, industry requests for highly educated horticultural technicians exceed the number of available graduates.

Students may elect to specialize in the Bachelor of Technology programs, the A.A.S programs or a Horticulture Certificate.

The Gardens at Farmingdale State

The Teaching Gardens at Farmingdale State College are a hidden gem that serve as an outdoor classroom for students in the Department of Ornamental Horticulture. The grounds are also open in season for enjoyment by the greater Long Island community.

The Farmingdale State Ornamental Horticulture teaching gardens consist of over four acres. These gardens were developed beginning in the 1930's by the horticulture students and faculty. Today they continue to be renovated and changed by the students and horticulture faculty under the tutelage of Dr. Richard Iversen.
