Visual Communications: Art & Graphic Design
at Farmingdale State College

Farmingdale State College’s Visual Communications program is successful because of a dedicated faculty, a career-oriented curriculum and, most importantly, the quality of our students. Our students are selected on the basis of individual artist potential and are evaluated by means of a portfolio review and a drawing test.

In addition to the traditional college students who attend immediately after graduating from high school, there are many “nontraditional” students in our curriculum, who, for a wide variety of reasons, have returned to school or are changing careers. Working in a creative environment with other talented artists who are striving towards a successful education and career as you are, makes this an enjoyable and exciting place to learn and grow artistically. Farmingdale State College art department alumni work in all aspects of the art field in all areas of the country.

The faculty and staff are all professionals dedicated to ensuring that each one of our students receives the best possible education. Our wide range of industry experience means you get relevant information and hands-on experience. This is a career-oriented program and our graduates are extremely well-prepared for a career in many different aspects of the exciting and diverse field of visual communications.

The curriculum is continuously revised to meet the changing needs of the students and the industry in which they will be employed. In addition to the important foundation courses in traditional media, such as drawing, two-dimensional design, typography, illustration and photography, we offer essential courses in digital media on the Macintosh platform. Software includes: Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and Flash, among others. A Farmingdale State College education means that you not only learn the skills necessary to get a job in your chosen field, it means you acquire a broad-based education that will help you build a successful career. Our art program was established in 1947, making it one of the oldest programs in the region. But it is also one of the newest programs, because we are constantly revising our curriculum to keep pace with changes in technology, industry requirements and the needs of our students.

Located in newly-renovated Sinclair Hall, the departments facilities offer state of the art equipment, software and traditional tools in a brand new building designed specifically for the needs of the Visual Communications department.

Two of the most important factors to consider when selecting a college are the quality of the program and the tuition costs. In other words, the value of the education you will receive. Farmingdale State College’s award-winning Visual Communications program not only offers an excellent well-rounded education in graphic design and the favorable makes it an outstanding value.
