The School of Arts and Sciences comprises disciplines that provide the traditional foundations of college instruction in the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences. Historically, the School has supported the College's professionally and technically oriented programs by providing instruction in these areas through the efforts of nine academic departments. The School of Arts and Sciences offers six degree programs:
The Liberal Arts and Sciences Program administers an Associate in Arts Degree program which provides students with a broad-based liberal arts education and prepares them for junior level study at four year colleges.
The Mathematics Department in conjunction with Stony Brook University offers a unique program in applied mathematics. Students complete their first three years of study at Farmingdale and earn an Associate degree. They spend the fourth year of the program at SUNY Stony Brook which awards them the Bachelor of Science degree.
The Bachelor of Science in Technical Communications Program supports the needs of business and industry in the New York metropolitan region. This four-year course of study is designed to prepare students for careers as researchers, writers, editors, and computer graphics specialists who assist professionals in translating technical, scientific, and professional information into graphic, oral, and written language for specific audiences.
The Bachelor of Science degree program in Security Systems and the Associate of Science degree program in Criminal Justice are administered by the Department of Criminal Justice. The program treats the technical aspects of the discipline and is designed to educate a new breed manager of technology who integrates crime prevention theory with the design philosophy and hardware and software components of computer security and sensor systems.
The School of Arts and Sciences in all its undergraduate activities stresses teaching and learning. The School is proud of its well designed degree programs, committed faculty, special programs and publications, student support activities and student organizations.
