The Raynor Wallace Award


The Raynor Wallace Award for Poetry is given annually to outstanding Farmingdale student-poets. This award is sponsored by the Academy of American Poets, which contributes $100 towards first prize, and by the generous support of the Farmingdale Student Government. The Raynor Wallace Award is named in honor of Raynor Wallace, emeritus chair of the English/Humanities Department.

Raynor Wallace Award Guidelines:

Entrants must be current Farmingdale students.

Interested students should submit 1-5 poems to Dr. Margery Brown by emailing them as Word or RTF attachments no later than April 17, 2009.   Email:  brownml@farmingdale.edu

Poems must be typed, one to a page, with no identification on individual poems.  The author's name, social security number, phone number, and list of titles should be typed on a cover page included with the entry.

Individual poems may not be longer than 50 lines.

Poems will not be returned, so entrants should be careful to keep copies.


Note: All entries will be reviewed by a panel composed of two current members of the Farmingdale student body and three members of the English/Humanities faculty.


The winning poems will be published on this website, in Aitia magazine, and The Rambler.


During a special program in the Ward Hall Great Room, (time and date TBA),  the winning poet will receive the Raynor Wallace Poetry Award from the English Awards Day featured speaker. The second- and third-prize winners will also receive their awards: First prize, $150; Second prize $100; Third prize $75.  Authors of the winning poems will be invited to read at this time.
